Gaming Skylanders portal

We have had great luck with skylanders for awhile.. Now we are having problems when we switch characters..
when we put a new character on the portal, it shows the correct color on the portal and the
correct symbol on the screen, but the character never drops in.. it just sits on the symbol with the
starfield pulling into it..

Is there any way around this? what causes it?

We thought it was the batteries in the portal, but we just put in new batteries and it did it
again.. We can't figure a way around it, not even with the home button, we have to
shut off the wii and turn it back on..

Where are you running the game from? If applicable, what cIOS are you using? Which port is it plugged into? If it's wireless (which I think it is) how far away is the accessory?

We are booting via Configurable USB Loader, I think the cIOS is 149.. The port for the adapter is the upper port since we have a hard drive in the bottom port, and the portal is maybe 4 feet from it..

We have played for days with no problem.. but today it has happened three times.. we've replaced batteries, not sure what the problem is.. random..

Have you tried to play with the original disc to see if the problem is the same ????

If yes, maybe defective !!!!
