Not much info at this point, will probably have to wait for any trial, but http://www.theregister.co.uk/2013/10/02/silk_road_shutdown/ has some more.

This may be less tech and more traditional screwups on the part of the admin.

It would appear that is indeed the case, for example it seems that a number of postings/advertisements either endorsing the site as "an anonymous amazon" or looking for employees/coding assistance etc. where traced back to the guy running the site (because he used his personal GMail address or his real name [temporarily, then changed to a pseudonym] in some cases). And also hiring a couple of hitmen who where actually undercover FBI agents or something (and paying them $80,000 and $150,000 for [fictitious] hits on "troublesome" users/employees).
Yeah im surprised on both counts, how long it lasted, and that it got caught. I mean it was really well hidden but word got around.
Of course word got around, that was the plan. The theory was just that due to the anonymity of the various technology in use (Tor hidden service, bitcoin etc.), it would be impossible to trace who was behind it etc. But the guy running the site screwed up in a couple of ways, linking him to the site and leading to his arrest.
The real question is, who the hell cares about this *ahem* service being shut down? :creep:

Well for one, illegal drug users. From what I gather, prices were a little higher than "street" prices, but the safety of not having to deal with drug dealers in person (generally in quite sketchy areas of town) was considered "worth it" by many. Other than that, there are probably some who view this as some sort of affront to their freedom or something.

Yeah, TOR's just been getting fucking wrecked lately. Not too surprised this got shut down with all that's been going on. I had an account on SR to look around at what was on there, I'm surprised most people actually got the stuff they paid for.

Well when you go around spouting shit like HURR DEEP WEB IS HIDDEN AND SECURE and DURR BITCOIN IS UNTRACEABLE it's only a matter of time. You're practically fucking begging every agency to come knocking at the door at that point. Hopefully he willingly turns over everything he can on whoever's selling. Pretty sure it's not just drugs either; I know at least one 'deep web' site is/was also facilitating the trade of firearms, legal or otherwise.

One of my former neighbors might or might not have been involved with Silk Road or something similar. All I know is he left or got kicked out of whatever branch of the military he joined in just a few years, had a warrant out for something like fleeing the scene of a crime (I don't know if that was ever settled or not either), apparently hasn't seen his own family in months even though he was hanging out and probably selling at my neighbor's place a couple months ago, and apparently only accepts payments via Bitcoin.

There's plenty of extremely illegal, dangerous, messed up stuff operating on "deep web" or "hidden services" or whatever term you prefer. There's a "hidden wiki" providing a list of many of these sites, with sites selling stuff ranging from hacked paypal accounts and credit card numbers/cloned cards, to numerous alternatives for illegal drugs (besides Silk Road, which was admittedly the most well known and, therefore, presumably the most popular), to guns and ammo, "hacking" services (e.g. DDoS, internet espionage etc.), stolen goods (plenty of sites selling Apple products, undoubtedly not quite legitimate), fake IDs, contract killers, the list goes on.

On top of all that, there are sites with things like instructions for making bombs and child pornography.

It really is a horrible mess, and I am rather glad than at least 95% of the population probably wouldn't have a clue what TOR is or how to access "deep web" sites etc. It disgusts and disappoints me that this stuff exists.

For the record things like TOTSE specialised in this sort of thing and stuff like the Anarchist's cookbook have long existed and were well shared all over the internet from the earliest of days, if they otherwise did not exist pre internet.

Oh, I know things like these exist outside of "deep web", it's not that I condemn Tor for enabling this sort of thing or anything; any time humanity has (or thinks they have) anonymity and freedom to discuss/do what they like, it is unfortunately inevitable that things like these come into existence. Doesn't make it any more palatable to my mind.

Knew the site by name/reputation, never used it. Says a lot that I know it, because I sure as hell never searched for such products, never felt the urge to try them.
But yeah, like it's been said before on here, this one is closed now, and they'll just start 2 new sites. Classic story, can't beat it

I love how they talked about the value of the drugs shipped on that website using current bitcoin values, when the site was operating for the longest time when those things were still only worth a few dollars, if anything...

Don't really see it as that much of a win for any anti drug movements though, I mean, there's probably much bigger fishs out there

To be fair silk road did both adjust values accordingly and fix things a bit so the wild swings were not quite so bad.

It is funny how they spun it, Silk Road has been around since 2011, and at the start bitcoins werent worth much at all, so even with adjustments they will be inflating 10 fold, but Yeah, Silk Road definately gave me better prices for drugs than dopewars ever did

more interesting is that the police seized bitoins from the raid. I wonder if they will loose popularity now that one of the major trading hubs is shutdown.
