I really want to jailbreak my new iphone now but I don't want to have to boot tethered on the computer every time it turns off. So should I go ahead and jailbreak or wait until a full untethered jailbreak is available? You can also try to convince me to not jailbreak. Please vote and post why you think what you think.
    Thanks in advance folks!

Tethered boot means the jailbreak is tethered. There's no such thing as semi-tethered last time I checked. That said, I would wait if I were you. For iPods and iPads, it's not that bad if you can't turn them off without needing a PC to turn them back on again. It's a different matter if something goes wrong with your phone and you are suddenly unreachable though.

Actually there is for iOS 6.0.1. It means that the idevice can power on and off regularly, but it can't use safari, cydia, mail and other cydia tweaks.

Oh, didn't know that. Even so, it's useful to have internet and mail on your phone when something happens, although it's not as bad as not being able to use it at all. I still say wait unless it's an iPod or iPad.

Okay right now I think I'll wait until a full untethered jailbreak is available. For future reference it's an iPhone (just in case it matters). Continue posting!

For as long as I've had my iPhone, I think it's only ever run out of battery and powered off once, but I do have a car charger. So for me, the answer would be go for the semi-tethered jailbreak, as my iPhone would very rarely even be shut off away from a computer, so I would almost never even have to utilize the semi-tether. (Actually, I would just stay on iOS 5.0.1 or 5.1.1 and go untethered if at all possible)

I would suggest thinking critically about just how likely it is you'll ever run out of battery, then make your decision based on that.

A question: What kind of iPhone do you have? I am assuming it's an iPhone 4 or 3GS with new bootrom, because this question wouldn't really make sense otherwise. The 3GS with the old bootrom can be jailbroken untethered on any iOS version, including 6.0.1, and the 4S and 5 cannot be jailbroken on iOS 6 yet.

I have an iPhone 4. I am usually at home near a charger or on the weekends at my friends house (he has a charger). And if I'm going on a trip, I can just bring my USB cable because I have a two USB charger in my car. One of the reasons I am even considering a semi tethered jailbreak is because I can still call and text(I think).

All the built-in apps, which include Messages and Phone, should work, except for Safari and Mail. You should also be able to use most non-cracked apps from the App Store (I would assume that browser apps like Google Chrome and SkyFire would not work, as Apple forces its developers to use their own web-kit which is based off of Mobile Safari). However, as SemiTether is not yet optimized for and barely even tested on iOS 6, you might encounter numerous bugs.

As far as I know, no it will not work but they are working on it for sure. I mean they took out iOS 6.0.1 in a couple weeks after its release.

Ehh I hope it comes out soon, one reason why I am holding out and not buying the iPhone 5. Still on iOS 5.1.1 on my iPhone 4S just because of the jailbreak. If I were you I would jailbreak it even if it tethered, to much good tweaks out there that are worth trying out. I just worry that many won't work on iOS 6.

I wish my iphone 4 came installed with iOS 5.1.1 so I could jailbreak untethered. I would downgrade to that but since I got my iphone on iOS 6.0.1 I can't cuz you need the shsh blobs saved.

    You're misunderstanding what SemiTether is.

There are only two types a jailbreaks; Tethered, which requires you to boot in a special way every time you shut down, and untethered, which allows you to boot normally.

SemiTether is a tweak that affects tethered jailbreaks (not a jailbreak in and of itself). It makes it so that instead of needing to connect to a PC and upload a package to your device in order to boot up, you can boot in a different special way, one where you are essentially un-jailbroken, but you can at least boot up without the aid of a PC. SemiTether is maintained by a group of tweak developers from TheBigBoss repo, not by any of the dev teams who actively work on jailbreaks.

SemiTether is not a jailbreak. SemiTether is a tweak that jailbroken devices run.

I should point out that the only reason iOS 6 was jailbroken so close to release (it was actually jailbroken on day 1, and so were each of the beta releases) is because of limera1n, a non-patchable bootrom-level exploit that all devices with A4 and earlier processors are vulnerable to. No matter what Apple does software-wise, the iPhone 4, iPod Touch, and iPad 1 will be able to be jailbroken on any firmware whatsoever with the devs having to do very little work. limera1n, however, will always result in a tethered jailbreak without additional exploits to untether. In fact, limera1n only frees the file-system. There is still work that must be done afterward to make things like Cydia work.

Unfortunately, ever since the release of the iPad 2 and the A5 processor, the limera1n exploit has been patched, so there is no public bootrom-level exploit that can affect any device released after the iPhone 4 and iPod Touch 4G. Without limera1n being able to take out the bulk of the work all on its own, dev teams now have to find more exploits with each new iOS release just to get a working public jailbreak. Even more bad news, a lot of the devs have been talking about just how much Apple has beefed up security in iOS 6, (and seemingly in iOS 6.0.2 which is exclusive to the iPhone 5 and iPad Mini) and then even moreso in the betas of iOS 6.1, even though a public jailbreak hasn't even been released. I hate to say it, but the future looks grim for jailbreaking iDevices. As always, it will happen eventually, but eventually may be a lot longer than we're comfortable with.

iOS 5 was fully jailbroken approximately 3 and a half months after its release. 5.1 was jailbroken in 2 and a half. iOS 6 has been around for about 2 months now, and with the devs talking about all the added security, it would be reasonable to say it'll be at least a month, probably more, but devs do like to surprise us, so you can never know.

Damn, and I thought I new a lot about jail breaking and stuff. Really the only thing I think about doing if I do jailbreak is cracked apps and gba, snes, and nes emulator. I think I figured out a way to get cracked apps for free and I'm going to try it today. If it works, I'll not jailbreak but if it doesn't snow, I'll jailbreak sometime.

Unlocks are not jailbreaks. The Gevey SIM card will only unlock your device allowing you to use it on another carrier.
