So currently I have a 3DS and a DS Lite that is being worked on.
Basically, the only working and fully functional DS I currently have would be my Aqua Blue 3DS.

I've previously owned a Burgundy DSi XL, which I've sold around 6 months back to get myself an android phone.

And.. I really regret it.
The DSi XL is the best DS I've ever had. I like it a bit more than I like my 3DS. I don't know why I've made a stupid decision like that, but I did sell it for the price of a new one, which is pretty sweet.

I guess I sold it 'cause I thought I would eventually start enjoying my 3DS as much.

Don't get me wrong, I still love my 3DS, but there's something about it that bothers me. Perhaps it's the GUI, how slow and not-so-responsive it is. Nintendo kept it simple with the DSi/DSi XL. Of course the only exception is the eShop. It is wonderful compared to the DSiWare store.

Anyway, I absolutely cannot handle playing DS games on my 3DS any more. I'm about to lose it. I don't like the two options of big and blurry, or small and crisp, when I choose how I want to play DS games.

The DSi XL was perfect. I do not mind an increase in the size of pixels. Overall, the experience was great, and it was much louder too.

While I am generally good at computers, I'm more of a software person than one that specialises in hardware, so working on that DS Lite is really not going well for me. I have the shakiest hand ever, and I'm not good at assembling things. Also my hands are way too shaky for me to be able to solder, so I highly doubt I'll be able to get speakers on that DS Lite, and I'll have to use headphones/external speakers all the time.

What do you guys think? Is it worth the price tag of $170?

Trade the 3DS for the XL, then when the 3DS is revised you can either trade again with the DS Lite you have or hope it's cheaper.

@[member='xist']: Well, like I said, I don't hate my 3DS, and I do have quite a lot of games for it (OoT3D, SF64, SM3DL, PilotWings, MK7) that I still play very often, so I want to keep it for now, even though I would enjoy an XL a bit more.

@[member='Icealote']: That's an interesting point there. I'm so convinced that I should start saving up for it. The reason I posted this topic is to see if it's a good idea or not.

Thanks all. More opinions are welcome.

the xl is the best ds system i've used. you can't beat those larger screens for homebrew and emulation, videos, general ds gaming, etc.

i love that my xl is a 1.4.3 with the dsiwarehax. i'd never trade it or sell it! but i'd be happy to get rid of my ambassador 3ds stuffed full of VC crap. my xl gets daily use, my 3ds mostly sits in a drawer wishing it got as much love as my xl.

and hey, 3ds, i'd love you more if you weren't so small, didn't have such an annoying 3d sweet spot, and if you didn't keep pushing your "family gaming/causal gamer" ideals on me!

Wow! I unfortunately never managed to get DSiWarehax, as I've never had points on my DSi XL. Though I do agree, the 3DS size is unacceptable for people who've previously owned the XL, but I do not understand why people complain about the sweet spot. I can see 3D just fine from most angles, and I only rarely need to adjust my position.

I feel the OS on the 3DS is just too.. slow. Little things like when you click on zoom out to distribute more home menu icons, react too slow. That's not a valid reason to complain, but when the whole system is slow and full of animations like that, it begins to piss me off. The DSi menu has always been absolutely perfect.

I'll check, maybe my report card just might pay the full price of an XL..

i can only see the 3d if i am looking at it directly. the 3ds has to be right in front of my eyes and about 14 inches from my face. if i try to play while relaxing in a chair, then i have to hold my arms up to get to the sweet spot. if i move the 3ds (side-to-side) a millimeter then i lose the 3d effect altogether. it has never been enjoyable. unlike my virtual boy, i put my face into the visor and its 3d all night long for hours on end without any issue, no matter how much i move my head or shift my eyes.

do you live somewhere that has craigslist? you might be able to snag a dsiwarehax xl system for a good price. its actually worth it, even though there are only a handful of dsi-mode homebrew projects, running them in dsi-mode makes a huge difference.

I still have my DSi XL Bronze (or whatever it is called, gold or something?) I love it, it's showing its age after 2 years but it's still loud, lovely and big ;D but I can never bring it out cause it's really big, so it's more of a indoor entertainment and I'm a very indoor person (lol) and the XL has been awesome. If you have the SPARE cash and CAN AFFORD it, get the XL and keep it. Keep the 3DS too I see some decent games on it. I let go of my Lite, not much regrets cause once I go XL I can't go lite ever.

I remember after getting my 3DS (launch) I got an XL and I was super excited. Even my dad noticed I liked it more than my 3DS. Although now I've sorta been going back to 3DS, with a bunch of my friends getting 3DS, and games like MK7...
Even with a broken R button, the DSi XL is amazing, and I couldn't live playing all my DS games on the 3DS...
It's a good amount of money, but I found a like new special edition Mario XL for $130 last year and I love the crap outta it.

Certainly a toughie, you've been spoilt by previously owning the DSi XL and appreciating those larger screens.

I wouldn't get rid of mine, and i'm trying to put myself in your shoes, if something happened to my DSi XL and i couldn't play on it again then i'm sure i would replace it.

So my answer to you would be, if you can afford it then go buy the DSi XL as seeing you're a previous owner of 1, you know how much you would enjoy playing on it again.

^ agree with eyes! If you got the spare cash, why not? I think XL would be a lot cheaper now with the 3DS out and about. The Lite's priced has been ridiculously dumbed down to about 120+ in my area (I bought it for 350 in 2007, dafug?).

I know it's a bit late to reply, but today I was seriously getting pissed off at the fact that I haven't played any of the video games I own in like 3 whole months, which is incredibly unusual for me.
I think I'm gonna go ahead with buying the DSi XL, and the good news is, I've found some pricey stuff lying around my bedroom that I don't need, and I'm totally broke (these include iTouch4thgen 8gig and Samsung Galaxy Gio). That should equal to around $300, so yeah, that should be good for a new XL + some savings.

Thanks everyone!

My 3DS and PSP sit in their cases and are barely used, but my DSi XL gets used every day. Hands down I think it is the best hand held on the market.

I would not hesistate to buy one.

Depends on how much money you have. I personally LOVE my XL. I love my 3DS too don't get me wrong, but DS games on it are shit and the D-pad is ugly, squeaky, and just plain awful. I hate how the DS games have to either be a pixelated turd or so damn small its not worth playing. That being said, get an XL....but keep it in warranty if you catch my drift. ;)

I'm glad you posted this topic as I have been considering getting rid of my xl. I have a GB Micro ,which I loooveee, a black dsi, a 'Black / coffee' XL and a black 3ds. I abosolutely hated it when they offered brownbronze, it looks and feels ugly when I think of brown,, but after trying a dozen skins and covers, I have finally found a nice aluminum cover that fits tight as skin and is black and feels great. In an ad the other day I heard the bronze referred to as 'coffee' ever since then, my ugly bronze XL has taken on a new life as my proud-to-own 'black / coffee' XL. I enjoy the 3ds but agree with the graphics thing everyone is saying.

I checked out the Vita the other day and decided I'd like to get one, yeah they have a lot of ports but zI've played none of them and the average game is cheaper from what I've spotted.. Every time N says they're releasing a game (both 3ds & DSiware), that I like, suddenly, it's not coming over here to the US or it gets bumped so many times I'm not certain it's coming at all.. Getting a bit tired of that... My best game so far has been the Fire Emblem 2 and I have that for my micro already.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy my 3ds, (not better than dsi yet though) but with Nintendos internal problems with 3rd party developers ie 3rd party dev, pay problems, fee disagreements content censorship, eshop learning curve (for them) and so forth I'm not sure I'm willing to wait this time, for N to get thier head out of thier arse and get back to doing what they do well-best, make games not manage other develoment studios at the consumers (time) expense. It is a fact that some developers have decided to never work with N again because of thier extended and lengthy approval process as well as other high-handed rules of thiers. I've forgotten the specific company names but I'm sure many of you have read the same articles I have from reputable sources too.

Anyway, after hearing your plight, I think no matter what I do I'll hold onto my black coffee XL.
