I installed BootMii on Boot2.

I then rebooted my Wii but BootMii didn't load.

I then rebooted my Wii with the BootMii files on my SD Card and it loaded at startup so I could make my NAND backup.

Is this right or should it autoboot without the SD card?

BootMii needs the files for it on SD, so if no one is inserted the slot will just flash and the Wii will start up as usual.

The only thing actually installed to your Wii is on 2 blocks of NAND. This is quite a small amount of space so the only thing actually written there is basically code to look for something on the SD card. So basically all of bootmii is written on your SD card, not on your Wii.

That's why guides say that you can just backup the files from your SD card and remove them from it if you don't want to have it load up on start, because it's easier to tell people to just do that then to confuse them with having to run another app like the bootmii configuration editor to do the same thing in essence.
