No, the lower your firmware the better for CFW. If you're installing NSPs with a program like Goldleaf, you can just ignore required firmware checks.

there are some nsp which won't work dispite ignore firmware so I would say yes you should.

If your concern is game compatibility, then yes, you should update your Switch if it's unpatched. If you care about downgrading, you can use ChoiDujourNX to install AutoRCM during the update process. Otherwise, you can just update normally.
