I usually download dvd rips, but now I have a movie in the dvd-r format in my hands. I don't want to burn it as usual but what I want to do is rip it.

    Any tips?

Do I mount it and then rip it (but with what)?

why not just play it directly?

also you don't need to rip it, if it's an ISO 99.9% chance it's already decrypted, so you can compress to AVI directly. there's many tools, look on for example doom9.org for tutorials

Yup, I'd just mount it and play it also.

If you're that worried about size, to convert you'll probably want an app called "AutoGK" (based on Gordion Knot).
