My second suggestion is to install MenuHex and just setup gateway to cold-boot through that. It's a lot easier with no chance of bricking.

You can't install Menuhax on 4.x.
I'm not really sure. I don't have any experience with 'PlaiSysUpdater'.
It most likely still would, though.

You will also need to update your sysNAND to 9.2 using PlaiSysUpdater, I can't provide CIA links to 9.2 though.

I don't know how young your kids are, but menuhax does not have 100% launch rate. So occasionally when you turn it on it will just hang.
It is still possible to make mset work with 9.2. It has been awhile, but I recall downgrading MSET on one of my 9.2 units and the profile exploit was working with GW. So if you don't wind up liking menuhax boot rate, you can always downgrade MSET on 9.2 and go back to what you were doing before.
As I said before, the ideal solution will be GW plugin with A9LH, but that would require you doing the A9LH, in addition to GW releasing the plugin. (Which is rumored to be very soon)
With the A9LH plugin, you will get 100% boot rate (due to A9LH) within seconds, then the GW plugin would load (splash screen) and then your at your emunand (if that is what you are using) and they can push select to choose their game.
It sounds like your technical skills are lacking, I would be careful if you decide to go up to 9.2. My experience with going from 4.5 to 9.2 (have done like 6 units - 5 of 6 did this) is that there is a high chance of a soft brick. I just had one a couple days ago. This is all easily taken care of if you have other hacked units and are comfortable doing this stuff, but for someone with barely any experience, it can be tough. (your options for downgrading when you soft brick and you have to update to a current firmware get less and require resources you might not have currently) -- 3ds oothax for example to be able to downgrade from a current system firmware release.
