SEGA's Mega Drive/Genesis Mini will release worldwide this fall

855QVHV.png

Since its delay last year, we haven't heard much of SEGA's upcoming miniature sized version of the Mega Drive/Genesis. Thanks to SEGA Fes 2019, we now have a better idea of what exactly the Genesis Mini will entail. On September 19th, the system will release worldwide, bundled with 40 different games that will vary depending on region. As the event took place in Japan, SEGA revealed the first ten titles in the lineup for eastern fans:

  • Sonic 2
  • Puyo Puyo 2
  • Shining Force
  • Castlevania: Bloodlines
  • Powerball
  • Gunstar Heroes
  • Comix Zone
  • Rent a Hero
  • Space Harrier II
  • Madou Monogatari I
The small console will either look like a Genesis or Mega Drive, and comes with a single controller and the aforementioned 40 games for about $60.00. If you want a second controller, you'll be able to get a package that offers all the previously mentioned items, and an additional gamepad for $80.00. M2, known for their Sega Ages collection, or alternatively, the 3D Classics Sega games on the Nintendo 3DS, will be developing the system software and handling the porting.

the genesis is a different story, everyone and their dog mod their genesis to change something of it, no matter the model, so a single mod to fix something is like the standard procedure.
Whatever, not my problem. I should expect this and the Mega SG to work out of the box without modding.

oh, absolutely. I didn't explained myself correctly.
I meant that the genesis community is completely ok with modding their consoles and so used to it that is just assumed that you need to do it.
but of course, for the average user that should not be the case.

I don't emulate tho, have a vast majority of games over the 2000 and almost every system that there is. I hacked all my systems so that i can swap on the go and use it in a better way without having to swap a disc constantly but to me hardware is the way to go. I used to emulate in the day but what ended up when i emulated is that i never finished those games but when playing on original hardware it does give you an extra feeling that makes you finish all those games you own and play. Can't explain it but i enjoy it a lot more than emulating
Original hardware is the way to go, especially with a high end CRT displays like Sony PVM's and BVM's. Some consoles are annoying in that they don't output RGB so they need to be modded.

to each their own.
I emulate on a raspi plugged to a crt tv, so it looks just like original hardware. it is more enjoyable that way, but I have no problem playing on a different screen or pc.
I've seen some video's on consumer CRT RGB mods, looks interesting, wouldn't mind learning myself but takes a decent learning curve as to what to mod and not to touch. I need to learn how solder also.

Some consumer CRT display's are crap that you can't even reach 100 nits without horrible blooming.

I wanna look into MAME and displaying on a CRT. Retroarch has that option. Since arcade machines are expensive and a few games haven't been realesed to home consoles like Alien vs Predator.

Can you display 240p with raspi?

I'm a total rebel and run my Snes games on pure FPGA hardware (Super NT), because screw spending money on an OSSC/framemeister. Also have an SD2SNES because paying some asshole scalpers on eBay is too much work.

SNES I actually don't mind emulating since both FPGA and Higan is pretty close to original hardware. But something like N64, no.

I think that rgb (outside of being redundant, component is more efficient) is not the correct way to display retro consoles, so no rgb for me, just composite and a run of the mill samsung tv that was still around in my house.

since 2017 (I think) the raspi received a firmware update to allow 240p though the built-in composite out, the output is limited but with retroarch and shaders you can achieve excellent results.
not to brag or promote myself but I'm the author of a set of configurations to take advantage of that https://github.com/Sakitoshi/retropie-crt-tvout

RGB has a much cleaner and sharper image. It's a big noticable difference from composite or s-video. I think the difference is noticable if you have a quality CRT. Playstation, Sega Genesis, and Dreamcast supports RGB out of the box. Picture wise component and rgb are the same. They look identical. My PVM accepts both so I could do fine with either one.

It's true that some games were made with Composite in mind, and they used techniques to make them look good in composite, and these technique flaws are shown with RGB.

yup, so clean that is takes away the blending that the developers took into account when creating the games.
look at a good part of the genesis library that uses mesh transparency or dither to create more colors. some snes and ps1 games also use dither and is all gone if you use something higher than s-video.

Choices Choices. Go with dithering and less banding. Or a shaper image. It's all preference. I guess it could be a game by game basis as to which you prefer. Good thing I have both cables and can swtich whenever I want.

This is kind of oversimplifying the genesis and how it handles RGB. I have not ran into a genesis where i did not have to lift the subcarrier pin to fix the stupid jailbar issue most genesis have with RGB. Its easy for those that are good with an exacto knife and soldering iron but i do not expect everyone to be :/ (I know you mentioned PVM, but given how difficult those can be to acquire :S)

As for the Sega Megadrive mini itself.... :D I love these little consoles too much (even when they can be subpar, so ill definitely be getting one myself. The community will always fix any shortcomings just give it time)

Genesis does supports RGB without any modification. Which is why I threw it in there. But ya, the Jail Bar issue is a problem if you want to get the cleanest signal. You would have to disable composite video to get rid of interference. The Genesis is known for having a super clean RGB signal.

I'm really tempted to buy an Analogue Mega SG instead. I know it's more expensive and that I'd probably need an everdrive, but it's such a nice piece of kit.

Too bad the European version of Castlevania will be the censored version
Still, that's the version people from Europe will have nostalgia for. For me having 60hz is more important, but that's cus I've been playing the system continuously since the 90s, but I still have to admit that even though I have a 60hz modded model 1 mega drive with retrogamingcabel's rgb cabels with separate audio jack, playing Sonic 1 and Altered Beast with shitty rf cabels is pretty nostalgic, especially the part about searching for the signal as if it were an analog tv channel.

So maybe get the NA version of the mini console?

Hmmm.. I think I'll go with the European, since they say changing region within the options will change the game regions, so in the west everyone gets both roms of the games that aren't international roms, from what I can tell. Also, I'd always take the Mega Drive exterior to the Genesis one. No point in having a Genesis, no one here knows what that is (even if a lot of people I know called it the Sega-16 or just simply the Sega)

Neat for the people nostalgic about retro Sega hardware, I suppose, but all the best Genesis exclusives are already in the 'Mega Drive & Genesis' pack. $15 or less on sale, and it has VR support to boot.
