Sega Zone, Sega's new retro console

For those eagerly awaiting the Sega video game console that can do what "Nintendon't," keep waiting. In the meantime, gamers will have to make do with the next best thing: the Sega Zone.

The Sega Zone comes equipped with 20 Sega Genesis games and 30 original titles, and sports a cartridge slot, as well, allowing users to play classic Genesis favorites. The confusing amalgamation of a system cribs its looks from the Nintendo Wii, and includes two wireless controllers. We suspect its makers are targeting visually impaired grandmothers on shopping trips, as the Zone is guaranteed to disappoint scores of children expecting Wiis for their birthday.

Sega has had a storied video game console history. Following the Genesis, of which we still have fond memories, it released the Sega CD peripheral, whose main claim to fame was showcasing the finest hour of 'Diff'rent Strokes' star Dana Plato in the game 'Night Trap'. The abominable 32X soon followed, another pointless add-on that found a permanent home in bargain bins and flea markets around the country. Sega was never able to fully recover from these debacles (although their final console system, the Dreamcast, still holds a soft spot in our hearts).

The Zone fills a questionable niche, as Sega's classic games can all be found emulated in myriad other places, from Xbox 360 and PS3 to the iPhone. For those unable to find an original Genesis console, and desperate to play their copy of 'Shaq-Fu', this may be their only recourse. The Zone will be available this summer in the U.K., and will retail for £39.95

Something very close to this has existed in the third world ever since... well... forever. You get the Genesis pre-loaded with some 100 games... and the Master System with a whole bunch too.

So, they are basically bringing it to other zones with a few perks... whatever.
