I still think the R4 Team is pulling a fast one. By releasing the new card which are SDHC compatible and screwing over all the people who have 1st gen units IMO.

The M3DS Real is out BTW. Its on DX

Did Nintendo pull a fast one when they released the DS Lite instead of a firmware update to the DS to make it smaller, brighter and have a longer battery life?
If SDHC is only possible on the R4 gen 2 (which nobody has confirmed), how is that screwing anybody over?

No they didn't (Nintendo). Because they announced those features. If the R4 team does what I think they will do, they will be pulling a fast one since they didn't tell us(It only works on 2cnd Gen).

who knows whether the death penalty would apply.

Anyone who wishes to look it up?

The chances of the R4 getting sdhc support are slim-to-none I'd say, but they cost £16/$35 these days so it's not a huge loss if it never does.

Also SDHC cards aren't that expensive anymore - around the same price as standard MicroSD cards.

you suggested a supercard as an alternative for your broken CycloDS. I have heard many hrror stories about that card on other forums. better get a new CycloDS than one of those.

Let me just add in for people who have doubts on SDHC support for R4 if they didn't know it already. Since DS-Link offers similar slot-1 / microSD cart, they just recently release a firmware that can support SDHC so I don't know why not that R4 can't do it.

Its more likely that after they were raided they just set up a new underground factory.
I doubt they were raided at all. The only recent raid was on a distributor in Hong Kong, not a manufacturer. And, anyway, most flashcart makers (R4 included) are based in mainland China, not Hong Kong.

edit: and i might also add they were only able to carry out the raid because the distributors were misusing Nintendo's trademarks, that's the only illegal thing they were doing. If R4 just took "DS" off the packaging they'd have nothing to worry about.

The firmware isn't stored on the card though. You update firmware with a .nds application. The R4 firmware runs of the MicroSD. DS Link firmware is stored on the flash cart itself

the usual saves lost stuff, although a recent update has fixed that. some devices quickly got bricked. some more I do not remember.

Well to jump back to the topic at hand, i personally believe that 2GB is more than enough.

it really depends on inamo, how much do you think you will need and why? that is, what do you plan to store on your microSD, be it games, music or videos, programs whatever.

Personally i have a video ipod to serve my video and music needs, i plan to get an R4 in the coming weeks solely to play games on the NDS lite i plan to buy. That's all i'll be using it for, so 2GB is more than enough.

If you believe you need +4gb for 4x the price, then you'd have to wait a while for it to be a reasonable transaction, however if this is just for gaming then i'd recommend going for an R4 or M3DS.

There is a good chance there won't be any more updates for the R4 or CycloDS for that matter as there have been major busts of chip makers in Hong Kong. It is possible the R4/CycloDS teams are either in jail or dead.

who's to say it's different group of people who make them and another that programs code for the kernals. I'd would of thought the two sides are in different places and are different work teams.

the teams are fine obviously - they have little to nothing to do with the factories.

Expect a shortage of CycloDS's though, as lots of those were taken during the raid of Supreme.

I really don't understand your point or overall philosophy as to what is o.k. for a company to improve upon from generation to generation. If R4 redesigns the chip to make it cheaper and faster to produce; do they have to have a press release? If R4 gen 2 is the only one that can take the firmware I am sure they will announce that when the firmware comes out. Does that make it through your loop hole that you let Nintendo through?
Companies are continuously updating design aspects and sometime they outclass previous design functionality. Don't have the early adopter blues. Be thankful for the extra time you had with a product that the 2nd gen guys didn't. No one knows if only the 2nd gen chip will get the sdhc but if it is that doesn't mean the R4 team hates the 1st gen buyers.

They worded it in a way that suggests current R4's can support SDHC (next firmware will have SDHC support). If it turns out the next firmware only applies to a new line of hardware, then yes, they would be pulling a fast one on anybody buying an R4 right now, expecting it to be compatible with SDHC in the future.

Of course, somebody mentioned that another team has already added SDHC support to existing non-SDHC hardware, so maybe it is possible after all and they aren't pulling the wool over our eyes. But that's just a possibility until more information about converting SD hardware to SDHC hardware through software apps comes out. In the mean time, I would still be very reluctant.

I think you misunderstand the current debate. R4 has two versions out right now. Version 1 has a spring loaded microSD and the version 2 does not. There is also another change that doesn't allow it to be turned into a M3. Of course if you order now you should get the version 2 like I did.
But the firmware talk is NOT and has never been about a yet to be released new line of R4 \ R5 cards.

For me, 2gigs is no longer enough. I keep popular games on my R4 that I personally don't really like just because some of my friends do like them. It's nice to have a vast variety of games in one cart just to show other people who may not necessarily like the same games you do.....especially in my case where I have vastly different tastes in games from everyone else.

At this point, 4gigs would be plenty, but my 2gig card is constantly filled to capacity and SDHC compatibility would be really useful to me.

What I want to play today may not be what I want to play tomorrow, or the next day, so having a variety of games to choose from is a must for me. Some days I want to play something simple and quick, other days I want to play a more in depth game. My mood changes daily.

I would also like a 4gb. Plenty enough for me. But let's not forget you can buy 4gb which aren't sdhc standard. Unless you want 8gb + then why are people so hopeful for sdhc support?

haha me too, I imagine that as time goes on and more games are released, even 4 GBs won't be enough. I like to have different games from different genres for variety and for my moods
