I am going to install Configurable USB Loader, and use FAT32 format on a new hard drive after work today. I have been running backup disc for a while. Being that the games are all disc, they are the 4.38G size unscrubbed. I would like to re-scrub all of them have them installed on the external drive. I would rather not use the DVD drive in my laptop and upload back to the PC. Can I do this using the Wii and the external drive only? I have read up on the + button install, but am kind of confused at what actually happens. Would it require returning the games to WBFS format? From reading old posts, it looks like changing to WBFS would mean I would have to partition the drive, which I am trying to avoid.

Games are automatically scrubbed when they are converted into wbfs for the harddrive. You dont need to do anything extra unless you are going to use .iso files on a ntfs harddrive.

I edited above to add this. So, in WBFS format would I have to partition the hard drive?

all modern usb loaders scrub your game disc down to size when you install them to a hdd via the wii by default

I appreciate the replies thanks. The urgency on my end is this external drive is also my much needed laptop backup.

So the last thing I still am not sure of is the partition. Not necessary?

no you do not need to repartition/reformat your drive

wbfs partitions directly support scrubbed games
    *.wbfs images on fat/ntfs too
*.iso images on ntfs can use the sparse file feature after scrubbing

good managers should have options to scrub games

ps note that in order to use sparse files the game needs to be scrubbed with 0x00
some tools use 0xFF instead for no apparant reason
