Scopely to acquire Niantic's gaming business including Pokemon Go
Niantic, the company behind the mobile app that took the mobile gaming by storm back in 2016, Pokemon GO, has reached an agreement with another giant in the mobile gaming industry, Scopely, for the acquisition of their gaming business, which includes several games, one of which being Pokemon GO for a total of 3.85 billion USD.
Niantic's decision to let go of their gaming division comes from their stance of focusing more on "advancing augmented reality, artificial intelligence, and geospatial technology", and Scopely's work on some of their mobile apps laid the foundation for Niantic to reach the agreement with said company for the acquisition of their games.
The games that Scopely will be acquiring as part of the deal are the following:
- Pokémon GO
- Pikmin Bloom
- Monster Hunter Now
- Niantic Campfire
- Niantic Wayfarer
After the acquisition, Niantic will be modifying their technology platform from Niantic to Niantic Spatial, which will focus on pioneering geospational AI, with their Niantic Spatial Platform releasing last year "integrating spatial computing, Extended Reality, Geographic Information Systems, and Artificial Intelligence to create immersive experiences that seamlessly blend the digital and physical worlds with centimeter-level precision".
However, Niantic, or rather, Niantic Spatial, will still continue to operate and and own their other AR specific games, like "Ingress Prime" and "Peridot".
