Scene dev Zecoxao teases new $3 modchip for the OLED Nintendo Switch, involves a Raspberry Pi

asddasdsa.png

Scene developer Zecoxao might be known for their contributions to the PlayStation hacking world, but this time around, they've got something major for the Nintendo scene. The longtime scener teased the existence of what they claim to be a $3 modchip for the Nintendo Switch, and which is said to work with Mariko and OLED systems, though not patched Erista consoles. A teaser video was also uploaded, where the modchip itself was revealed to be a Raspberry Pi--specifically, a RP2040 Zero unit, soldered into the Switch board, demonstrating Hekate launching on an OLED unit.

Given the tease of "coming soon", we can expect to see more details about the exploit eventually.

I have a raspberry pi with I think all accessories. it's never been used. it's a version 4a or b one iirc. I don't plan to exploit my system. doesn't anyone think that will be worth something?
The Pi 4 isn't relevant for this hack, but it's a nice little gadget that is always in demand. If you wanted to sell it you could get what you paid for it any time, or make a sneaky profit if you find a time it's in short supply.

Hot take: I'm going to be honest... Is there even any point in installing CFW on the Switch? Cause I had CFW on my Switch for a long time (I have a launch day Switch and a Lite) and there's barely any worthwhile homebrew. Even then half of the few worthwhile things are half finished and unmaintained. Like that OpenRCT2 port. On top of that compared to other systems I've installed CFW on in the past the Switch is by far the most annoying. Gotta have your jig on you at all times in case you ever need to reboot (or literally brick my boot partition to AutoRCM it but then I can't ever just cold boot it normally), gotta have a USB-C to USB-C cable with me to send the payload from my phone, every piece of the CFW is a seperate download/install (hakate, atmosphere, sigpatches, teslaoverlay, mitm, 90dns, etc etc), etc etc... I mean the only thing I could justify running a modded Switch for is Android or Linux and for the latter I'd rather just use my Steam Deck. I can install whatever I want on that. Maybe I'm just getting old but the Switch isn't really worth modding. (Unless you're a pirate I guess. Lol.)

Taking out something I have on my stack:, can we agree in these Nintendo Switch Versions?

AliasModelCode NameSOC
Original (unpatched or patched)HAC-001IcosaErista
Red BoxHAC-001-01IowaMariko
LiteHDH-001HoagMariko
OLEDHEG-001AulaMariko

SOC is System on a Chip is the revision of the main Chip on the board. Mariko is a revised version which have a better performance and battery life.
Right, got it now; thanks for the helpful table.

Barely any worthwhile homebrew? What homebrew do you even want that the switch doesn't have?
Also, you can reboot without a jig. Plus, since the switch is designed to be left on all the time anyways, you rarely even need to.

How about a 3D printed unique cartridge where you can assemble the Waveshare RP2040 board?
Still you will need to connect the wire to the mainboard but at least the additional hardware will be in stable place. And you could have the USB connector accessible in the cartridge slot.

Have you heard of the dragon injector? was a RCM jig that fit in the cartridge slot of the switch. I say was for a reason. The project no longer exists and is super hard to come across.

I love my modded Switch, and it got all the homebrew I want:
- I watch movies by retooting into Android
- I play retrogames in Retroarch
- Right now I play OOT, made by the Ship of something mod.
- Love A link to the past in widescreen mode (also a homebrew port)
- Yes, I do pirate

As for starting the Switch, I always have my switch in a carrying bag alone with my USB cable and jig so it's no problem. And, for most of the time my Switch stays on so I propaly just need to use the jig once every month.

I don't miss anything, except maybe a movie player for swith - but again, I use android for that and it works great.

the one and only reason i want cfw in any capacity is to play and beat Super Luigi Odyssey after that my switch goes back to being a dust collector

Well, note that it is a wonderful idea and worthy of applause, the detail is that we would always need micro-welding to make some connections from the board to the cartridge reader, the idea is 100% great, we would have to see how to put it into practice but we still need the code for rp2040
