Hey all you foreigners, I want to know what are the stereotypes for the United States of America. What is it that you think we 'muricans do. I am currently working on a homework assignment and my topic requires me to know what are some of the stereotypes for the U.S.A. Don't be afraid to post something dumb as well, even if I am using this for homework.

Is that a notable thing?

Anyway I once read a book called American Ways: A Guide for Foreigners in the United States because I will read basically anything but it was pretty enlightening, even despite supposedly being half American and spending quite a bit of time there over the years.

Anyway the place is too big to make proper generalisations -- life in Washington state was rather different to California which in turn was rather different to New Mexico (the big three places I ever spend time, though I have been to several others). The big three that usually get me are not bringing elderly relatives into your houses, not having kids come back after they leave (if they are not kicked out at 18) and wanting visitors to get a hotel by default. The existence of jaywalking always amuses me and 21 being the drinking age which people actually respect (ish) amuses me even more. The dislike treatment of gambling causes me to raise an eyebrow. On a more technical side of things the approach to vehicles seems incredibly backwards and quaint (car electronics are usually about 10 years behind the curve and the US stuff was 10 years behind that), though as fuel cost nothing until somewhat recently and is still pretty cheap I can see some of that.

Similarly the "fear" of anything that might be called socialism (though I understand the historical reasoning, even if it was stupid) I find to be both quaint and baffling, and possibly a bit sad, especially the healthcare stuff. I suppose I should mention the gun thing, that will be it.

After this most things have some reason -- tipping is a thing because for whatever reason restaurant staff are not paid (the same) minimum wage.

I have a question for people outside the US. what do you guys think about the US war against occupations in the middle east for the last 15 years, or the conflict with russia, or US military initiatives in general?

Americans buy only 5 liter jugs of milk. Americans always use butter instead of margerine.

You expected me to insult them? Too bad for you.
