Hold up did you mean New 3DS XL or the older 3DS XL? If you mean the older model don't get that with an adapter just buy an actual SD card not a micro SD.

A microSD card will work just fine on an old3DS. I would know, I am using that very same microSD card on my old3DS right now without a single problem.
