Sakurai plans to include "several more" DLC characters for Smash Bros. Wii U/3DS

In an article from Famitsu, Masahiro Sakurai has revealed that he plans to add "several" more DLC characters, and cater to the votes of the fans in the Smash Bros. character poll. He also stated that the additions of Lucas, Roy and Ryu were already planned for and in development for quite a while before fan input was considered.

From now until the end, it is going to be fan service, but I can't keep the development team together forever, so there's only going to be several more characters. I also ask for your patience, as we need time to develop more content.

Here's hoping we see some more awesome 3rd party characters for Smash.

I'd like to think that Issac from Golden Sun deserves a spot. The summon system could offer another unique character and with Ryu's addition, I know Nintendo's engine could handle it.
