I'm sure we've all played Runescape at one point or another. The popular browser MMO holds millions of accounts and is still active after many years. However, the issue of botting in the game has grown significantly, with developers Jagex recently laying down the law with a massive 1.6 million account nuke on players who were caught botting. Now, to continue combating the issue, Jagex have come up with a new way to deal with bots: democracy.

The new Botany Bay area, while having nothing to do with plants, allows players to decide the fate of those caught botting. First time offenders will be marked by a large dragon claw that comes down from the sky and points at them to show other players their disgrace. I'm not making this up. After the third offense, players caught botting will be transferred to the Botany Bay area, where the community will vote on their fate.

Players who participate in a hearing at Botany Bay will receive a pitchfork as an item. They also have the ability to throw fruit at the botting player, just to add injury to insult.

Botters found guilty can be executed in a number of bizarre ways, such as being stomped by a dragon or disintegrated by the light of the Runescape Gods.

So, Runescape bots, a witch hunt seems in order.

I used to play Runescape pretty hardcore as a kid. I haven't played it in years but it's a pretty solid MMO actually. Cheap membership cost, tons of content updates, and it's practically playable on almost any rig.

This does sound really funny though.

I haven't played in about a year but bots were the main reason I stopped playing. Why don't they use instantly permaban them, they ruined the game, let them have it.

I play runescape. Well, when I feel like it. I love the daily spins they have. And hell, that 350k lamp thing for the daily spins was like the only reason I leveled up so much. I still do the daily spins.

I think it's funny. Why not humiliate them?

Honestly, the only time I ever used a bot was an auto clicker and that was like 6 years ago.

Thats pretty cool, most MMO's dont have anything you can even do against botters except report. I remember Maple Story had an item you could use on someone that made them have to answer a simple question, but then the little kiddies started abusing it.

This seems...interesting, to say the least. Certainly an odd approach to it not seen very often.

I stopped playing Runescape around 2006/2007 or so, though I've been thinking of checking out 2006scape the past couple of days. Certainly seems interesting to be able to go back to what I remember it being.

Jagex really should endeavor to create a more sophisticated MMO. They're honestly pretty damn good, it's just that runescape is really restrictive being a browser game that is meant to be accessible both graphically and content wise, to anyone.
Creating something with a bit more depth would be amazing considering how good they are at bringing out content at a constant rate, and then things like this.
It's sad the community has given Runescape such a bad name, but really Jagex and the game itself aren't bad in the least...though honestly runescape classic > modern runescape.

    Yeeah only a couple...hundred thousand people...daily.
