[RUMOR] Report claims Super Mario Galaxy along with other Mario games will be remastered this year

7001907.jpg

Nintendo's mascot is celebrating his 35th anniversary this year, with some possible remasters on the way to mark the occasion, if some rumors are to be believed. News website Video Game Chronicle issued a story claiming that Nintendo would be releasing "several" major games, which would include "most of the Super Mario back catalog, remastered for the Nintendo Switch". VGC's sister site, Eurogamer, also corroborated the story, with their own sources hinting at Super Mario Galaxy being one of the remastered mystery games. Yet another reporting site, Gematsu, made its own separate claims that Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario 3D World would be involved, alongside a brand new Paper Mario reveal. Only time will tell if these rumors turn out to be true, but they certainly would be major announcements, if so.

[UPDATE]

The original story has been updated, with the outlet providing more concrete details from their alleged source. Supposedly, Mario 64, Sunshine, and Galaxy 1 will be released as "a special anniversary collection", instead of just straight ports. That release will be followed up with a Deluxe version of the Wii U's Super Mario 3D World, featuring new content. Finally, a new Paper Mario game is rumored, with the site claiming it'll be a "return to the series' RPG roots".

Ugh; Sunshine, Galaxy and 3D World? Hard pass.

Nintendo's never been able to top Super Mario 64 DS, in my book; each of those three games have numerous utterly-frustrating Shine Sprites/Power Stars/flags to reach. Galaxy reduces Mario's HP to 3 for no justifiable reason, and all three games have impossible-to-control surfing mechanics, while Galaxy and 3D World have stupidly-strict timed missions. Oh, and Galaxy and 3D World also feature Rosalina quite prominently, which I cannot stand; she's never done anything of note other than stand in one place on either the Observatory or the Faceship - fuck her; she should've been left behind in the Galaxy duo for good, just like how so many better characters have languished, locked to only their specific Paper Mario games. 3D World not only makes Rosalina playable (which is stupid in itself), but also Peach; she's better off as kidnap fodder and the main goal of the game than as a playable character.

Odyssey was a major improvement on these three games, but it still kept the stupid 3-HP cap instead of reverting to the superior 8, and still had several utterly-frustrating Moons; there's still nothing that beats 64 DS.

Just port over Super Paper Mario; other than 64 DS and 3D Land, that's my favourite Mario game.

Their exists a man/thing known as the "memoryman3" and I believe he would like a few words about what you said about rosalina :P

Sounds like an early April Fool's joke.
Very hard to believe Nintendo would release remasters of immensely popular Mario games in a span of what will probably be less than half a year.

Majora's Mask 3DS is a remaster and... well. We know what happened.
What happened? They messed with Zora Link's swimming, so that going fast forced consumption of magic, and other annoying things that have been patched back in by fans? They added the completely optional and pointless fishing spot that players never need to touch to complete the Bomber's Notebook?

I'm actually of the same opinion as this guy; Rosalina really does do nothing but stand at the front of the Comet Observatory. She doesn't give 1-Ups or reassign those Prankster Comets, or anything of note; the ability to spin is given by a Luma, not Rosalina. As for Galaxy 2, she's not seen until the very end, as a reward for finishing the Perfect Run mission, where she's just standing in front of a small house, then moves to the Faceship, where she's still standing, offering nothing to the player except a cameo. Oh, and the ending cutscene, where she collects the Luma that's been with Mario and leaves.
The reward for finishing Perfect Run might as well have been a gold trophy or some other inanimate reward.

Rosalina's beautiful, yes, especially in that blue dress, but that doesn't matter when she's utterly useless. She should have stayed in the two Galaxy games, and not been featured in Super Smash Bros. 4 and Ultimate, Mario Kart, and 3D World.
Where's Bobbery? Koops? Kooper? Parakarry? Goombario? Lakilester - uh, Spike? O'Chunks? All these guys are far more interesting characters that should've made returns, but haven't. They all deserve the recognition Rosalina has undeservedly been handed.

Now can we finally get a remastered or even now version of Punch Out!!? Why is it that we have to wait decades between releases for one of greatest franchises ever made?
I've been wondering about that too; the last one was on the Wii.
I want to see Glass Joe and Soda Popinski on modern systems with modern resolution standards.

Are most of them not old enough to be classics at this point? Mario Galaxy was 2007, Sunshine 2002. Similarly they remastered most of their NES efforts for the SNES, GBA and beyond.
Or if you prefer would dumping them on virtual console raise eyebrows (beyond them actually caring about their virtual console stuff)?
If this is modern code as well (and they kept it) then presumably it would also be something of a matter of pressing subsurf once or twice, maybe tweaking aspect ratio, possibly fixing a bug or two (or removing whatever textures and songs they based on Islamic chants lest they offend someone for whatever reason) and making sure the controls work.

well there is no virtual console now, just very few nes and snes games and they cant even be bought, but only rented while you have your subscription active.

They already stopped caring about Virtual Console; it's a thing on 3DS, Wii and Wii U, but not on Switch - which is just one way this console is inferior to the 3DS and Wii U!
Anyway, instead of continuing the Virtual Console business, Nintendo unwisely decided to stick NES - and eventually SNES - games behind the worthless Switch Online. Stingy idiots...

I would rather pay 20$/year to have a massive collection of old games than pay 5$ per NES/SNES game.

the diference here is if you stop paying monthly you cant play any game, second you will only play lik e a handful of the games listed there. In the long run if your not an online player you will end up paying way more to play the 5 or 6 games you would have bought.

What the hell's wrong with peach? Getting pissed off by rosalina because of the fact she's not doing anything is already questionable, but when peach does something you immediately want her kidnapped again? what kind of double standard is this? also "stupidly strict timed missions" my ass. ive played through the majority of 3d world and i find literally none of these missions youre talking about. besides that galaxy doesn't even have a timer so i really don't see what you're talking about.
Also, paper mario literally has nothing to do with this- this is a 3d mario collection, not a new paper mario game or something. why the hell are you expecting paper mario characters in a non paper mario game?

yeah but most of us already own these games via piracy or previous VCs. i'd rather pay 5 dollars per game for more console variety, stuff like gamecube and n64, not nes and snes for the thousanth fucking time. ESPECIALLY NES, most of those games are so arachic and outdated by today's standards, especially with the super nintendo versions of the franchises being so much better.

Galaxy DOES have timed missions, actually; several Purple Coin Stars are timed, especially the one with the pull stars in the haunted house galaxy. That one's got a very strict timer that doesn't even have the kindness to stop once all 100 Purple Coins are collected, meaning one also has to mess with the pull stars being quite wonky in order to race to the Star itself.
So does 3D World, in the postgame - after Meowser. Several levels there have incredibly short time limits, which can be extended with clocks - if one can reach them.

As for Paper Mario, my point was that many of those characters had far more personality and usefulness than Rosalina does, yet they were never seen again after their game finished; the exceptions are Parakarry (who's seen at the beginning of The Thousand-Year Door) and Bow (who's seen in The Thousand-Year Door's Poshly Heights after the game's done), but that's it.
They're the ones that should've been considered for Mario Kart, not Rosalina.

Finally, that "double standard" you mentioned isn't one at all; Peach is the main goal of the vast majority of Mario games, so she's always had a useful role. She's not just standing in place, and in the Galaxy games she sends the player 1-Up Mushrooms in letters. In 3D Land, she sent postcards detailing her hijinks in trying to escape; that's worthy. The first two Paper Mario games had her finding info on Bowser's/X-Naut's plans then sending them to Mario; while they were tedious and boring gameplay-wise, that's still useful.
Rosalina? Nothing. No 1-Ups, no aid in the various galaxies, no moving Prankster Comets, nothing. Nothing to justify her inclusion, or her coming back in future games. The same could also be said of Daisy, actually, except she's only seen in sports games (and with Ultimate, Super Smash Bros.), so she's not as egregious.

Peach being the kidnap victim and damsel-in-distress is more useful than the perpetually static Rosalina ever could be.
