I don't see how this is a downgrade relevant to the gaming experiance. The core console is going to be exactly the same, the only thing that actually changes is the loading times due to decreased internal RAM. As far as the internal storage is concerned, it could be totally gone for all I care - it's not like memory cards are SOOOO EXPENSIVE, right?
The way I see it, Sony just wants to develop a console for the posh boyz and girlz and a console for the typical, casual gamer crowd - that's it. At least their variants actually VARY. Compared to the "huge" differences between DSi and DSi XL for example, THIS is the way to go.
