According to an unconfirmed report, Nintendo is putting together applications to read digital books on the Wii U/3DS.

An anonymous software developer speaking to Forget the Box states that the studio he works for has been approached by Nintendo to port iOS applications to the Wii U and 3DS as well.

3DS players would be able to read on the move, whilst Wii U owners could sit back with the tablet controller as a form of eReader.

The application would let players download books, magazines, newspapers etc with SpotPass being a likely feature for daily/regularly updated content like nationwide newspapers, for example. More gaming-related content would be be available - Virtual Console guides, instructional manuals for downloadable games and even a library of past editions of US magazine Nintendo Power.

Yep. !?! I don't know why I did when I know they have AR cards and the QR code thing. Stupid me.

I'm not sure that would work well with the 3DS's low resolution screen. This would make sense with the Wii U, though.

Nintendo sure are doing a smart move if this is true: it appeals very much to a tablet market as well as the standard gaming market.

With a screen that size, coupled with interactivity from the console, speakers, color screen and buttons, it's sure to make it more fun to read for example children books on it. I can see this appealing to broader age ranges, which is exactly what Nintendo want so they can safely say "IT PRINTS MONEY!"

While I dislike the Wii U controller, an e-reader function for it is pretty logical. Adding it to the 3DS makes less sense; I don't think the screens are large enough to support this well.

I enjoyed reading books off of my DSphat. Of course, it went leaps and bounds when I got an XL, but I don't imagine it'll be any less with a 3DS.

the only people who complain about not being able to read stuff properly are those that have no love for walls of text. i for one don't mind the resolution-- i have finished a few books using only mobireader on a tiny nokia phone. it's all a matter of interest.

To bad the biggest part of gamers won't read beyond the menus... Seriously my cousin and his 37183728 friends didn't like zelda 3ds "just cause there was to much reading in it". Anyways, an e-reader is a good idea, reading in the ipad isn't bad at all, I just hope Nintendo offers an online library with like lots of books.
It would suck to get an e-reader and, well, nothing to actually read.

Hopefully it will support loading your own epub (and possibly pdf) files on it so you can take advantage of project gutenberg for a metric buttload of free books.

Yeah it works great but it's the obvious Ds factor you loose from it it's not like playing atari games on atari because Nintendo actually use to give a reason to buy their hardware

  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
Can't be that far off from it not like ds requires super hardware
  • HiradeGirl @ HiradeGirl:
@K3Nv2 I did that using Citra for 3DS games. Bottom screen was my smartphone. Until I got the touch screen.

    Use a TV
