    Between insane and insecure
Some sites/people claim it's legal to own them for only 24 hours, but as far I know, that's actually false.

So yeah, even if you own the game it's illegal to download them.

If you dump the game yourself, you're OK.

If you created the ROM yourself using the actual cartridge, it's legal. If you downloaded it from some website, then it's not, even if you own the game.

ROM dumpers are prohibitively expensive, but creating personal backups is perfectly legal.

    and not share it

backing up your own games is much safer
anyone remember the DS rom hack that made the DS Phats and Lites and Brick by overwriting the firmware?

User's fault for not checking what the ROM was - it's not hard to determine whether a ROM is a genuine dump or not. Besides, the effects were (in most cases) reversible and the maker of said Bricker released a fix for those affected. There were two brickers with pretty much the same code in them, they came from the same source.

r0mloader.nds was one of them, there was also taihen.nds.

yea but still proof can you trust what your downloading also
hence why dumping your own is the way to go, keeping them private and to yourself

    Cory in the House anyone?

Cory in the House was not an .nds binary though, I know a better Pokemon prank, y'see. :creep:

And if you download *anything* and run it without checking what it is, you have nobody to blame but yourself.

Legality depends on the country. For example in Holland, I believe it is perfectly legally to download copyrighted content regardless of whether you own a legit copy or not, the only illegal part is the hosting. Although I could he wrong or it could have changed.

In almost every country, it is completely illegal to download copyrighted content of any kind when you do not legitimately own said content. It is irrelevant whether said content is available for purchase or not. There may be one or two exceptions, but in general, it is safe to assume that it is illegal.

The point in question in this thread is whether it's illegal to download content that you legally own, which varies a bit from country to country.
