ROMhacking.net shuts down after nearly 20 years

The game modification site ROMhacking.net, home to nearly 20 years worth of ROM hacks and community projects, has decided to close its doors as of August 1st, 2024. This sudden change comes after an increase in bot activity, content takedowns, and hostility with those involved with the site's operations and ownership.

The website's database, including all ROM hacks and other content uploaded to the site, has been preserved on archive.org. In addition, the site will remain up in a read-only state.

It does seem stuff is still up on the site
Yeah that's mentioned in the post linked as the source:
We have released the site database (sans account and/or profile information) as well as all of the files and images to the Internet Archive. In summary:

* Internet Archive of Database and Download Files
* All Submissions other than News are permanently closed.
* All sections of the site will remain up as read only.
* Downloads and images will be available for as long as DarkSol, FCAndChill Calico will allow.
* Forum will remain up
* Twitter and Discord affiliations have ended. Anything further from these outlets do NOT represent myself or ROMhacking.net.

I've heard rumors, even did some reading about stuff that allegedly went on behind the scenes that led to the downfall of the site. I can't really tell what's what, though with the evidence of how some of the people are in "romhacks.org" I have to say, pretty primitive and stupid to attack another group if that's true.

At the end of the day the point of these sites is to retain a library of passionate works created by many individuals, it's still a downfall when places like these go, regardless of how dumb the people behind the sites are at times. Luckily it was preserved the best way it could have been, but yet another time capsule is basically gone. Currently there is no real spiritual successor to look towards either, so as it stands, be careful where you get your hacks.

DVDs do last way longer that HDs do unless root or breakage happens.
They only last long if you're using good quality media and that they're stored properly.

I peeked over at RHDN, and some of the drama is the usual culture war garbage.

i wouldn't mind if a replacement for romhacking using innovative web design were to come into existence.

i wouldn't even have the slightest clue where to look for random hacks without it

Assuming I'm reading and interpreting this right, XKeeper of TCRF is offering to take over RHDN and prevent the shutdown. If I were Nightcrawler, I'd take that offer in a heartbeat.
