Little known to non-Japanese gamers was a surprisingly charming (for me anyways) DS RPG called RIZ ZOAWD. This is an anagram of the beloved Wizard of Oz. Xseed has granted my personal wish and decided to localize it as-

I'll tell you a few things. It's a gorgeous 3D RPG where you play as Dorothy, Tinman, Scarecrow, and the Cowardly Lion. I guess you can get more out of it by looking at the Japanese trailer. Here you go-

Technically at least, it's one of the most impressive DS game to date. You move Dorothy around by rolling a virtual trackball on the touch screen. Roll faster to run, roll slower to walk. Works well, but takes getting used to. Enemies appear onscreen and you enter battles when you touch them. Battles look a lot like old school Dragon Quest games in that you see enemies, but not your characters. They're fun, but not too innovative.

Obviously, the real charm of this game will be the story that most of us know. It's The Wizard of Oz. We'll finally see if the game is truly any good. I'm unsure if there is an official date, but Gamefly has it listed for a September 30 release date this year.

    Gameplay graphics look beautiful.

Not a very big fan of RPG's, but I might look into this.

But wow the Tinman looks powerful o_o

RIZ ZOAWD was published in Japan as D3 Publisher. The full name for the localized game, published by Xseed, is The Wizard of Oz: Beyond the Yellow Brick Road.

I think that game is based on the story 'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz'...

I played the Japanese version and it's very simple in nature.

I was amazed at Dorothy's outfit which got a serious Harajuku transformation and looks better than the original, I think it's kind of hot.

    Warning: Spoilers inside!

Yeah, Toni. We seem to share similar tastes in games. [IMG]

I've played it a bit and I hope it's as good when you get farther along. Good news at least. This and Nostalgia are two games I thought might not make it over. Now they are! Now announce a DQ9 US date and unveil DQ6.

Watched it when it came out, looks like a really good game.
And wow, that control scheme looks like it could work really well with a sonic game!

This game peaked my interest a while ago. I wanted to play it in English but never thought I would. Thank you Xseed. The graphics look great and the gameplay will be fun. And of course the story will be great. I'm curious to see the sales when it launches. Usually the Japanese orientated games that Xseed localizes bomb but the Oz name might be enough to get decent sales. Either way it'll be fun.

Also read about this when it first came out. I've always trusted XSEED to bring me good games stateside, and so far they haven't disappointed me yet [IMG] .

Looks very nice, surprisingly while the story itself is normally targeted at younger audiences, the graphics look less "kiddy" than the new FF game (4 warriors) mentioned earlier [IMG]

When it comes out, I'll have to give it a spin (track ball emulation... really? [IMG] ), and if it's good, I'll get a real copy for my Mom seeing as she's a fan of the old movie. It will at least give her something else besides Tetris and the Brain Age game to play.

Yes, she was actually suckered in to upgrading to a DS for the Brain Age game. [IMG]

The game was looking pretty good back when it was released. And I was pretty interested at the trckball controls. But it looks really pretty.

XSeed have really localised great games.

From what I've played of it and the reviews from Japan, its pretty much a "meh" game.

I fount it pretty uninspiring and fairly generic, aside from the looks there is nothing to set it apart from most low grade RPG's out there. The touchscreen controls mostly work but I always ended up pressing the options and that while trying to run.

Perhaps when I can understand the story more I'll enjoy it more but from the guides I've used to understand what I'm doing its fairly boring. Younger gamers who haven't been gaming for 20+ years may enjoy it more unless they've blitz most of the popular RPG's on all systems.

    The soundtrack is lovely though.
