League of legends is a DOTA/MOBA game from the developer of the original map/mod to Warcraft 3 that spawned the "genre", there have been many other games like it all carrying various levels (including a little spat over the name itself) but League of legends is one of the most popular offerings in the genre itself and certainly one of the more well known entries in it. For more on the genre we high recommend the All your history show's telling of the story.

Unsportsmanlike conduct in this case apparently means a type of screenlooking.... guess all those splitscreen complaints from your friends actually meant something.

LOL!! Ha! That's my reaction. I can't stop laughing! XD.

I do not care for league of legends and such like but I am interested in the idea of fines and "unsportsmanlike conduct" as it pertains to computer games (and real sports but that is somewhat more established). I might have to read further into that.

Edit- screenlooking where it may have been partially the fault of the contest organisers.... it gets more interesting.

Edit2- added a bunch to the opening post; a single quote from gamespot says very little and it is of interest to those that might not know what DOTA/MOBA is.

Soon you will go to jail for cheating, it's really getting ridiculous at this point.

Well considering that this was a 2 million dollar tournament, I can see why Riot would take it seriously. This happened in one of the World championship matches so it is kinda a big deal if you get an advantage like knowing where the other players are on the map.

I might find it endlessly amusing (especially the circumstances behind the incident in question) but this would be a contest with a prize of some note available at the end of it; if governing bodies and such of other "sports" can levy a fine then this is not so far away from that.

They were fined instead of something more harsh, because the game during which the person screenlooked was restarted afterward, regardless of his actions.
Also the fine just means they don't make as much money from the tournament.

By the sounds of it, they're only fining Azubu Frost if they win. The team they won against already released a vlog stating that they would've lost even if they didn't cheat (they only cheated in the first game, and TSM legitimately got stomped in the second game), and the other teams that were caught cheating already lost and got eliminated.
It's still Riot Games' fault because of the way they set up the stage. Why did they put the global minimap behind the players (within view if they turned around) anyway?

EDIT: Never mind, they already won $150 000 by advancing into the semifinals. But it's still just a reduction of winnings.

Well this is a laugh, Riot.

But really, isn't paying people up to $2,000,000 for playing LoL the real crime here?

When the 'game' offer such prizes it kind of stops being a game and starts being real fucking serious money-making. If you could earn 150k USD by just peeking a few times, wouldn't you do it?

Stupid move from Riot of course, very very stupid and predictable.

I can hardly take LoL seriously. I just hate its aesthetics and the tournaments always seem to come down to some type of fixing or "cheating". Although this cheating was just fucking dumb and honestly an oversight by the crew who set up the thing.

Dota Internationals is where it's at. If you enjoy boring yourself by watching "competitive gaming".

Fixed. $2,000,000 is the prize pool, first place is $1,000,000.
Also, when you consider how many millions Riot is making from this game, and that each person on the 5-man team would only get $200k, it's not that bad.

Actually, I think it's kinda good, because on the other hand that 30 grand will be donated to a charity. Maybe cheaters will actually feel proud but broke, on the other side!

The thing I don't get about the whole thing, is the screens that were viewable to the audience is suppose to be 3minutes behind the actual gameplay that is going on on the players screens to prevent this sort of thing.

That is only true for normal Spectator mode. In competitions, the delay is around 3 to 30 seconds only.

Seriously, Riot should learn from Valve. TI2 was so well organised, all those who attended were praising it to no end. And we the viewers enjoyed it massively as well with great in game infrastructure for viewing and the stage was set up so well with cheating in mind, with soundproof (well, it was actually white noise) booths for the players. If there's any model for a successful esports tournament, it's TI2.

not to mention LoL is for casuals /fanboy

Well, let's be fair here; riots aren't well known for operating in an orderly fashion. I guess this one is no exception.

Since when did the genre stop from being an AoS type of game and turn into a DotA/MOBA (I don't even know what MOBA means)?

Also, down here we call that screen peeking as "comsatting". I left you guys two clues as to why we call it that.

I have been watcing the S2 Finals quite closely, and from what I've seen, the stage was horribly designed. Also I find it funny that only AF is being punished, even though like 4 or 5 other teams cheated as well, but Riot claimed that only Azubu's cheat "had major impact on the way the game went"

Not to mention the countless of TSM fanboys...
