New Super Mario Bros

Welcome back Mario!

HISTORY

Let’s start with a little history lesson. The first real Super Mario Bros sidescroller game was published in the year 1985 for the NES (Nintendo Entertainment System), it was called Super Mario Bros. Because of it’s big succes a sequel came out in 1988 called Super Mario Bros 2. Finally in 1990 Super Mario Bros 3 saw the daylight and became one of the best Mario sidescrollers ever made.

In 1991 Nintendo released Super Mario World for their new console, the SNES (Super Nintendo Entertainment System). Later on, in 1993 they released Super Mario All-Stars which is a collection of the first three Super Mario Bros games plus a game called The Lost Levels (which actually was the Japanese version of Super Mario Bros 2 and was totally different from the American and European version). The last sidescroller with Mario was published in 1995, Super Mario World 2 “Yoshi’s Island” (although Mario wasn’t really the main character, it was Yoshi).

If you look back in history then you can see that it was 15 years ago when Nintendo last made an original Super Mario sidescroller in which Mario is the main character. This is where New Super Mario Bros steps in.

STORY

The game starts with a cutscene in which Mario and Princess Peach are taking a nice stroll around the ever so peacefull Mushroom Kingdom. Suddenly dark clouds gather above the castle and lightning starts striking it. Mario runs towards the castle to check out what’s happening when all of the sudden Bowser Junior appears and kidnaps Princess Peach. It’s Mario’s job to return Princess Peach and the Mushroom Kingdom to safety once again.

GAMEPLAY

Mushroom Kingdom is divided into eight worlds like in Super Mario Bros 3 and each world has multiple levels. For example the second world (Desert world) has levels with quicksand, the fifth world (Ice world) has levels with slippery ice and heavy snow finally the eighth world (Fire/Rock world) has levels with hot scorching lava. There are a lot of secret levels and alternative exits to be discovered if you have the patience and time to look for them.

To get through the different worlds Mario needs to reach the end of each level and defeat the boss at the end. Mario can run, jump, stomp on enemies, shoot fireballs (when he’s Super Mario) and become invincible when he touches a star.

Like in all the Super Mario sidescrollers, Mario can collect power-ups to make it easier on himself to get through the levels. We have the traditional red mushroom which makes Mario bigger, the power flower which turns Mario into Super Mario and the green mushroom, which grants Mario an extra life.

One of the new power-ups in NSMB is the super-size mushroom, when Mario eats it he becomes a giant and can destroy half of the level and the enemies with it!

GRAPHICS

If I had to conclude the graphics of NSMB in one word, then it would be “fresh”. NSMB is a blend of 2D and 3D graphics while (luckilly) it still maintains the feeling of the traditional 2D sidescroller. The main characters and the enemies are all in 3D and looking good. The levels are themed perfectly graphics-wise and the special effects look very neat. You can also appreciate the little things like running through low water and seeing how the waves splash when you jump out.

The future is bright, and so are the colors on the Nintendo DS Lite. Once you’ve played this game on a DS Lite it’s hard to get back to the traditional DS because the colors look a lot more lively on a DS Lite (but isn’t that the case with any DS game?).

SOUND

Most of the sounds are of course refurbished ones of the old Super Mario Bros games, this doesn’t mean that it sounds bad though, quite the opposite, it has never sounded so good to collect a coin or to destroy a block.

The music sounds good, it has the typical happy or scarry feeling, depending on which type of level you are playing. Eventhough every theme has it’s own style of music, I’m still a bit dissapointed in the amount of music. It lacks variation and they used the same music too much.

REPLAY VALUE

This is a game you can keep playing over and over untill you’ve found all the secrets and alternative exits. You can also challenge yourself with speedruns to see how much faster you finish the game before any of your friends do.

When you’re tired of playing NSMB then you can switch over to the minigames. Sadly, if you have already played the minigames in Super Mario 64 DS then you probably have already played all of the minigames that are present in NSMB.

There is also a local WiFi mode possible in which you race against each other as Luigi and Mario to get as fast as possible to the finish.

Conclusion

This is a game that every Nintendo DS owner should buy without a doubt. The graphics, the sound, the fun… it’s complete. Mission Accomplished Nintendo!
