I'm amazed the fella has kept on with the WiiWare version, he even says it'll probably cause a loss profit wise what with WiiWare never really doing good business, even when the Wii was at his height of printing money. However because he announced it, it is still coming out. Bravo Sir!

The WiiWare version will be released February 28th for 1000 points and unlike the XBLA/PSN versions will include a special ROM City Rampage Prototype bonus. Basically it's this game as if it WAS for the NES! Of course the game as it is now looks like a NES title but obviously no way that game would run on that hardware. The "ROM City Rampage" version is how a game like this could run on that hardware this is kinda like a look back to when this game was originally a NES remake of GTA3 called "Grand Theftendo".

ROM City Rampage Prototype will also appear in a free update on the same day for Steam owners and for those who haven't yet bought it, it is now on sales for half price. No news on whether this will appear on a future update for PSN for the PS3/Vita version but the XBLA version won't feature it. The developer wants to but can't due to Microsoft's policy on charging developers way too much just to update a game. Before anyone asks, there will be no Wii U (it does have a Wii mode you know) or 3DS versions as the developer is done with ports and wants to move on...who can blame him, this game has been in the works for over 8 years.

All this was mentioned on the developers Facebook page

Here is my review of the PC version

It states there is no Wii U version of the game. Wii U doesn't have WiiWare either, it's called eShop on that.

I'm curious to see how the "vectorial" levels will look like on this ROM prototype.

Haha great, I've been so tempted but I'm still holding out for the wiiware release. I hope someone else handles a 3DS version down the line, the eShop got rid of the stupid limits and terms, plus it seems like a indie friendly environment from what we've heard. Putting up DLC and updates for your games on there is free iirc. They could easily make some decent profit that way.

I don't understand why M$ would charge devs for updating their games. It makes no sense whatsoever, even by business logic.
One would think they would want the XBLA version of games to be just as good as their Steam or other console counterparts.
Sure, they make more money off the devs that way, but they make less money off the customers due to losing potential sales to customers who prefer the superior versions when devs refuse to pay the fee.

It's a bit weird, it was the same with Fez, the developer needed to release a patch and MS charges a large amount for it. I don't think it makes good business sense for them to do this, I mean someone giving free content for a game puts that game back into the spotlight and generates more sales. It's more of a "fuck you" to customers that they want all XBLA content to be paid for.

People talk about Nintendo being backwards with their online stuff but they've not pulled shit like that this gen.

The friendlier Nintendo plays with homebrew devs, the better. Likewise, as long as they keep an organized ranking system on their download page, things won't become too cluttered and you'll be able to quickly check out the cream of the crop then take time out to find those undiscovered gems when you please.

i've been bugging brian provinciano ‏on twitter to release the nes prototype rom. this isn't what i had in mind, but i guess this is better than nothing. i wonder if he had to get nintendo to agree to this change and if they said only if he puts it into the virtual arcade and if there was no way to extract it and play it on a nes emu.

No doubt, while on the one hand I was happy to see that GrandThefTendo has survived, I was also sad to see it was not longer being developed as a Nintendo ROM.

Too bad, the 3DS eShop is really starting to shine, and I can actually see this game thrive there. Hell, I'll probably play 9.99 for this, it seems to be better than most "premium" priced eShop titles anyway.

And I guess that makes you a god if you can find a way to illegally download this game?

Yeah .. it kind of would, if he's really figured out how to extract it that quickly. There is still the chance he's just dumped the ROM City Rampage logo into a tiling program, but on balance, I doubt that a troll would have gotten it done that quickly or known how already.

Achilles, I would really appreciate it if you could explain the extraction process, whether it was from the PC or WiiWare versions and whether you could also extract the impulse tracker chiptunes from the bap (Brian's Audio Pack) file so that we can examine the music in the game. :D
