I bought Red Steel a few months ago for a bargain price, and after playing it I would've happily paid more for it.

Am I the only one who doesn't find the game that bad?
I'm not saying it's amazing or anything, around a 7/10 game basically.

What's really sad is that even though the graphics are incredibly inconsistant, some of the graphics are still the best on the wii

I dont think that the game was bad (certainly not as bad as all the shovelware we get nowadays) but it did fail to live up to the hype and expectations that were given to it pre-release. In my opinion, the game was really fun with multiplayer being the highlight. It brings me back to the Golden Eye days a bit.
But I do have to agree with you in regards to the graphics. I think that the casino themed level was really good but then other places lookd horrible.

I fount it to be pretty decent when it first came out, but now I just think its really mediocre. Its having to drag the reticle just to turn right that kills it for me, it is one of the most backward design flaws there is. Really kills the flow of the game. I had no problems with sword fighting, or aiming.

Levels are pretty generic, any seasoned FPS gamer will know what to expect and will feel like they've played the levels many many times before.

Looks wise, it resembles a GameCube title but after the tragedy that was Far Cry Wii I don't mind that. The music is great and sets the atmos well but the voice work is pretty bad.

It still can be fun at times but I don't really see any hardcore FPS gamers loving this. Medal of Honour Heroes 2 is far far better. I really hope that the team can sort the turning shitness out for the sequel.

Since they're not scrambling for a launch title release, they can take their time with red steel 2 and I think the game should end up pretty decent.

and MoH2's controls are excellent, but it doesn't change the fact it's another WWII game

Not sure, they hyped the game too much before it came out. So many dissapointed to it. Personally i think that it's really lame game compared to other shooters out there.

But then again if your only wii owner there's not much to choose from

I think that's the intention, I think I've thread that its been in development for over a year and I know that they will be using the Motion Plus add on for better control. Also there will be more competition with Call of Duty 5 on the way (sadly they're going back to WWII), The Conduit & Quantum of Solace which reports are saying is very good so they'd have to up their game with it.

I played and solved Red Steel back, when I bought my Wii.
For a launch title it was great. I loved it and have good memories to it.
After playing MOHH2 (which has perfect FPS-Controlls) Red Steel is not that good, but still for a launch title I really like it.
I wouldn't want to sell my copy!

Yeah, it really irritated me at the time, as no-one gave it the review it deserved. IMO, it should've gotten 80% or abouts that. It didn't live up to the hype, but it still does far, far more than the average FPS. The character models and lighting are some of the best on the Wii as well, I agree.
I feel sorry for Ubisoft too, who made a good game, but only got one good review for it (NOM, which gave it 91%, way above the mark), and lost a good deal of sales because of it.

Fingers crossed Red Steel 2 keeps the originality and graphics, while improving on the sword-fighting, ironing out the bugs and polishing up the controls. Then they'll have a winner on their hands.

For you maybe but I can still play the likes of Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, Quake, Heretic & Hexen and still have as much fun now as I did then.

A good game is a good game no matter how many years has passed or if something is better looking.

I finish DOOM 2 at least once a year.. it's still a great game, amazingly fun!

Nowadays FPSs have too much story, dialogs, item collections, NPCs and complexity.. I miss games like DOOM and Quake were you're only objective was to kill everything that moves.. Hope iD don't disappoint me with DOOM 4 and Rage

Just my thoughts.
Back when the Wii was launched, everyone thought this game sucked because it didn't do what people wanted it to do - but that was all thanks to the limits of the Wiimote. People didn't seem to care anymore when they realized they had to stick with these kind of controls for the next few years...Red Steel clearly is one of the better original games on the Wii, and it's also one of the best looking shooters...
Some passages, like the very last level, look astonishing for Wii's standards...And the swordfighting still works way better than, let's say, Wii Sports Boxing.

I think it would've received way better ratings if Ubisoft didn't show off so much manipulated footage, and if it was released some months after the Wii's launch...
Look at the first trailer now, it's *ridiculous* how much better than the actual product it looks.

It's good to hear Ubisoft is working on Red Steel 2 and already confirmed it to be motionplus compatible...Let's hope they're determined not to fuck it up this time

I got Red Steel for Christmas along with my Wii I think. A bit of a surprise gift, but I had heard of it to a degree, and figured, eh, what the hell.

I managed to play it for quite a few hours that night, and I spent quite a while trying to beat it. Honestly, there wasn't many complaints about the controls once I got used to them. And the swordfighting wasn't too terrible, not 100% accurate but RS2 can make use of WiiMotion+--or, well, I guess it is now. Hahaha.

I wrote a review for it a long while ago: http://web.ics.purdue.edu/~djmerrit/Gaming...teel/index.html Old, but still counts. =P
