THQ's environmentally destructive shooter series, Red Faction, is apparently dead, according to THQ.

Following poor sales of the latest installment, Red Faction: Armageddon, THQ CEO Brian Farrell said "we do not intend to carry forward with that franchise [Red Faction] in any meaningful way."

Red Faction debuted back on the Playstation 2 in 2001, later coming to the PC and Mac. It's notable for using "Geo-Mod" technology, allowing for real time environment alteration for a level of destructiveness and mayhem that is still yet to be seen in video games. The series, however, did not take off to great success, as its sequels (Red Faction II, Guerrilla, and Armageddon) received lesser and lesser success. The games are still considered to be rather popular by some and will always hold a special place in the hearts of many explosion enthusiasts.

If you feel like reliving some of the nostalgia or seeing what the series was all about, all the games are available on many digital distribution platforms such as Steam, or you can always pick them up for last generation or current generation consoles.

I myself may try digging out my copy of Red Faction for the Playstation 2 for some local multiplayer mayhem with some buddies in remembrance. What about you?[/p]

The first Red Faction is the only game in the series that I really cared about. 2 was decent, but after that it went way downhill. I keep the original installed on my PC at all times and often find myself messing around with the glass house when I'm bored.

The first two were fun, but the last two sucked.

I always had a soft spot for red faction one and two, I really do love those games even to this day. I think switching to a third person open world environment really killed the franchise. A red faction 3 first person shooter would have been far more successful.

EDIT: No wonder when I tried to quote his post it didn't quote it.

I did like the second to last one as well as the first person one (Though I never played the first one fully it looked awesome.)

They should have stuck with open world, it's so much more fun when you can just go around and destroy stuff/blow stuff up in-between missions.

Well, given that megaman has good sequels while this one had some bad ones (Armageddon *cough*) I don't see how it relates.

To be fair, Armageddon wasn't terrible, it was actually pretty decent, however I think people were expecting a much different game and that's why people didn't like it/poor sales.

I loved the originals, and guerrilla was good too. But Armageddon was just bad. I play it once in a while and I just don't enjoy the game. It isn't like it is the worst thing EVER, but it is not worth 65$. It's worth like 30-35$. I hope that Red Faction goes away. And one day, a company like rockstar picks it up and makes it magical again. Like Red Dead Redemption did. I want quality in games, not flashy bullsh*t and pre order bonus'.

True, it's not that bad, but like you said, people wanted something different.
