It all just started with this one video:

Then I went and looked into it a bit more and found some more songs like it and I realised that hiphop/rap is not that bad.
I used to listen to it a lot when I was a kid but then I got into puberty and felt I had to be a nonconformist and started listening to rock.
So now I've rediscovered the genre and even though this doesnt mean that I'm all into rap and going to abandon rock., I don't see why I shouldn't listen to good music.

Here's a list of my current likes:

Dial My Heart - The Boys
    Him Or Me - Today
It Takes Two - Rob Base
Just Got Paid - Johnny Kemp
We Got Our Own Thang- Heavy D & The Boyz
    I'm So Into You -SWV
Money Can't Buy Yo... - Ralph Tresvant
    Don't Be Cruel -Bobby Brown
    Feels Good Tony! -Toni! Toné!
    Motownphilly - Boyz II Men
    flyPaper - k-os
Can I kick it? - A Tribe Called Quest
    Small Town Girl - MJG
Hope - Twista ft. Faith Evans
Hostile Gospel Pt. 1 [Deliver Us] (OFFICIAL) - Talib Kweli

Also, please keep any anti-rap pro-rock comments out of here please.

Check out the Flobots Fight With Tools album, it's fantastic. Smart lyrics, smooth sounds and great samples. I'd also recommend pretty much any Chuck D, De La Sould (3 Feet High is my favourite), Disposable Heroes of Hip-hopricy and Spearhead. I'll go through my collection and see what I can recommend.

Any particular style or sound you hate? I'm not a massive fan of gangsta rap (although Ice T is awesome) so I'm not too up on that stuff.

Thanks for all the recommendations. I'll make sure to check them out.
Also, I'm not really sure either, I haven't really bothered listening to hiphop/rap in the past couple of years so I'm kind of trying to keep an open mind. I guess I'll find out through trial and error.
I actually heard the song handlebars by flobots a while back and I thougt they were nu metal. I loved it but my mate said the rest was rubbish so I ddin't bother listening.

The kind of rap/hiphop I listen to is different from that in the video, but the people I listen to a lot are Hieroglypics, Jurassic 5, Run D.M.C., Crown City Rockers, Gym Class Heroes, and I think Lupe Fiasco has some good ones.

If you are looking for some samples search on youtube High Fidelity - Jurassic 5 or At the Helm - Hieroglypics.

    EDIT: put in high fidelity.

    EDIT2:
yeah they are good too. they are the ones who make their beats with instruments right?

NO. I must HIGHLY recommend against DJ Khalad.

FLOBOTS (My favorite song by them would be Rise.)
    Eminem
    Beastie Boys
Don't want to stray too far from the original idea..

    Oh,

    Go for Thrash Metal,
    Some Metallica, Slayer, ect.

but if you must go back to Hip/Hop Rap

I'd go with what JPH said.

    Tupac
    Bone Thugs,
    Notorious BIG
    Eminem
    Dr.Dre
    Jay-Z (possibly)

Everything on the radio now is crap, and sounds like some kids wrote it
    (Soulja Boy)

The only decent artist out now is Lil' Wayne, But he's not amazing

I agree DONT go with DJ Khaled

Pretty much anything K-Os, his Collected CD has a couple of great Remixes of some songs from him. Ummmm, theres all kinds of different material out there, theres Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, Tech N9ne and all of his Strange Music Affiliates, ICP, Twizted, Tha Dogg Pound, 2Pac, Eminem, Biggie, Damian Marley, Bob Marley, all kinds of music.

@JPH - I didnt know you listened to some Thug ass shit!!! Thats tight. RIP Eazy one of the greats.

Before your start listening to any recent stuff I suggest listening to the classics. Public enemy, black star, run dmc, Cyprus hill, tupac, biggie smalls, dr. dre, jay-z, kanye west, snoop dogg, warren g, black sheep, dilated people, and the game. Start of with start like that. Then you can go even deeper into hip-hop.

Nas - Get Down (fucking fantastic track)
50 Cent - Patiently Waiting. (Normally don't like him but it's a great tune)
Hoodratz - Dis Buds 4 U (although I think I remember you quoting some HR a while back)
Flobots - Stand Up (One of the best tracks I've heard in years)
Jurassic 5 - Quality Control (although everything they do is awesome)
Tribe Called Quest - 1ce Again.

    De La Soul - B.U.D.D.Y.
    Afrikka Bambaata - World Destruction
    Outkast - Ms Jackson
Queen Latifah - U.N.I.T.Y. (or pretty much anything she's ever done!)
Naughty By Nature - O.P.P. (similar sound to Tri
    Mos Def - The Definition
    Ton Loc - Wild Thing
Sir Mix A Lot - Baby Got Back
    Missy Elliot - Gossip Folks
Digital Underground - The Humpty Dance
    Ice T - Radio
Cypress Hill - Cock The Hammer
Method Man - Bring The Pain
    Beastie Boys - Intergalactic
Naughty By Nature - Hip Hop Hooray

    my favourite artists basically:

    Beastie Boys
    Bone Thugs N Harmony
    Che Fu (New Zealand)
    Dead Prez
Immortal Technique (Might be a little too extreme for your tastes though) ("Aids infested child molesters aren't sicker than me")
Kanye West (kinda going off him now though)
Lupe Fiasco (best new rapper of the last.. 10 years?)
    Mobb Deep
Mos Def (I'd take a bullet for him)
    Nas (Him too)
    Nesian Mystik (New Zealand)
Outkast (Don't like their new music a whole lot though)
    Scribe (New Zealand)
    Talib Kweli (Bullets? Him too)
    Tupac (Of course)

incidentally, I've recently been getting into rock music, only really listened to hip-hop my whole life
