That's impossible to do that for every citizen, not enough agents.
And then you'd also get the whole problem of, where to get the agents to watch the agents who are watching the citizens... and their cats (cause you never know, someone hasn't tried that one in US court yet..?)

war on our citizens, guilty until found guilty.

Whomever came up with the idiotic DMCA which is preventing even security specialists from doing things like legally analyzing possible viruses in the USA should have been court-martialed for treason. On so many levels the direction it looks like legislation here is going to take is just plain wrong.

This would be a sad,sad day for everybody around Canada and the US, possibly every continent around the globe if we don't pull together and stop this law from passing....Seems like our nations are becoming more and more like communist countries each and every day....So please everybody...Lets get out there and kick some ass!!! Unless you wanna start paying for games, movies, anime and music? >.

it will happen some day...even if you have right to protest or assemble or even complain and pettition...if they like it...they will pass it...."Fuck you"...we didn't have any say in the matter about chips in drivers licenses or about anything ...obama after all is a socalist he is frends with the ACLU (American Communist Leaders Union) (the "ultimate goal" is communism) ...the government practically fuckin owns everything....you don't have rights or privacy rights anymore.. (geeze those tabloids about the world ending might not be so far fetched :wtf:)

we don't have any say in the matter (like what democracy is described as) THE GOVERNMENT does...(wow sounds a HELL of a lot like COMMUNISM!)

but this will hold it off until "then" = _

Oh Bell and other telcos already do that. DPI boxes track what you download, monitor it and when they see it's P2P activity they throttle your bandwidth and keep inspecting you to see if it's illegal.

Can non-canadians take part in these?

Yeah, what can we do, beside Digging this?
I've dugg it, and I'll make sure my brothers do it too.

Great post by the way Ace Gunman, you really caught me and got me interested.
While you likely can't take part in the official sense, every little bit counts. Spread the word, Canadians and non-Canadians should both know that they now have a voice in this issue. Such legislation would primarily affect Canada, but as stated it's a global issue in the end.

It's pressure from US lobby groups on Canadian politics that drives this bill forward. It's world governments wanting Canada to stop shirking global policies. Don't be mistaken, copyright reform is important, we can do a lot to change and alter such laws for the better. And in general, those mindsets are fine. It's understandable that the United States and other such countries would want everyone to fall in line with some sort of similar policy...

But the problem is what was happening, up until this point, was that Canadian laws were essentially being dictacted without Canadian interests, knowledge, or input in mind. The global community and heavily pressured government of Canada (not that that's any excuse) is so eager to make us fall in line that in doing so we're being made an example. We'd labor under some of the most strict copyright and technology laws in the world.

The way I view this particular issue is as such: in the US, there's an ever-growing movement that feels the RIAA has too much control over the government and copyright laws. They're bothered by the fact that they seem to have so much influence and utter disregard for the population. Well, this legislation would be as if an RIAA-type group WAS the government, rather than simply influencing it.

I digress... global pressure made this scenario possible, so in theory, the more people who know and make a stir about it on a global level, the more likely it is to change. The key here is to make the issue known, make your voice heard. Whether it be as a Canadian via consultations/activism, or on a global scale simply getting the information out there.

So wait, doesn't that mean they'll also be arresting everyone that sells pirated DVDs?

There's a mall called Pacific Mall in Ontario. Full of Asian people selling a bunch of stuff... Pretty much 80% of the mall sells pirated DVDs, stuff to make your consoles use burned games/downloaded games. The other 20% are like clothing, food or toys (this includes models, stuffed toys, playing cards, etc)

What's gonna happen to all those people? I can imagine a whole police force coming into the mall and raiding every store there...

No wonder the bandwidth in my house is messed when I use P2P. Everytime I use torrents, my bandwidth suddenly slows down and everything is slow. What my dad does is he just resets the modem... By turning it off then back on xD.

Could we not create proxy servers to hide what we are downloading from outsiders who are watching us? And the disgusting thing is that we pay asinine prices for internet service and providers are wanting to start ratting people out to the cops for illegally downloading stuff. Ya know, people would actually buy stuff if we weren't getting raped in the ass over the cost of video games, movies and music. Granted I don't pirate music anymore since iTunes is a fuckload cheaper then buying a damn disc but I sure as shit ain't paying 35 dollars for a damn DVD or 25 for a CD. I don't give a damn if our dollar is worth less then the US coin, I would sooner use alternative methods to purchase stuff for far less, if you make bulk orders it is worth paying shipping costs and not having taxes. Amazon, iTunes, Netflix and a variety of other services are great for movies, music, books and games, I don't have an issue with paying for products so long as they are affordable. If I want to buy a CD, I will get one from a store like The Beat Goes On since there are a number of them across the country, you can get brand new CD's without the price markup of a store like HMV, I have purchased albums for 9.99 on iTunes, BGO was asking 12.99 for the same thing but HMV was asking 19.99 plus taxes, iTunes wins because there are no taxes in that regard but if I can't get something off iTunes, I can probably get it for cheap from BGO, HMV can fuck themselves.

Banning flashcarts and mod chips won't do much, people can still find ways of getting them into the country regardless.

Rogers never does that for my friend who is on Highspeed Extreme. I guess they figure since he is paying like 70 bucks a month for internet service, they don't care. They have done it to me though, I have hit 1MB per second on regular Rogers highspeed and that only happened once with a torrent, after that they started throttling my connection, but I will be sure to reset my modem if they are doing that to me.

Don't forget that all of this is just a small part of the issue. Flashcarts, modchips, downloads. Those are all large issues to us here, which is why they're what I chose to focus on in my post, but this legislation would limit us in virtually every way, technologically speaking.

And one cannot forget the businesses. It's all well and good to say "Hey, it's alright, I'll just get my flashcarts from a discreet store in India", but what about the likes of the Canadian GBAtemp affiliates? Honest business who depend on flashcarts, modchips, and so on to make a financial living. One must think about more than how it will affect us on a smaller scale. On a large scale it could be absolutely crippling.

No offense, but why the hell are we worried about something as small as GBATemp sponsors (uhhh, sorry XD)? That's just the tip of the iceberg here... The issue is much bigger than "where will we get our carts now?"
I merely chose to frame the issue that way because people are more likely to become involved with issues that affect them. And make no mistake, this would affect GBAtemp deeply. So no, it's hardly the only issue, it's not even the most important issue, but it's the one everyone here can relate to.

And the digg link is at the top of this post.

I'm kinda out of the loop on this one. Yeah, I sent a thing to the Ministers and all, but can someone enlighten me on what will happen to a US citizen like me? Will I be feeling these effects?

I doubt it because we already have our own copyright laws. It's everyone in Canada that will feel the most effect however, this will also have an effect on GBAtemp as well because some of the affiliates are based in Canada.

It's the domino effect, really. Are any of your favorite file downloading sites Canadian? Gone. And so on.

In my opinion, Canadians shouldn't be restricted by some adopted US policy. I may be a continentalist, but I believe that the US and Canada should have differing policies on this issue. I like being able to do what I want on the Internet unmonitored, and I also like being able to do what I want with the stuff I purchase. If I want to modify my PSP or make a copy of my video games/DVDs/CDs/, I can. That's the way I like it, and no longer being able to do that is a strong restriction on my rights.

And you bet your ass I already sent a letter to Stephen Harper and the rest of the government stating my opinion!

American political groups like the RIAA and MPAA should keep their fucking noses in their own country and deal with their own people and leave our people the hell alone, they have no authority or right to be try and change our governments policies on copyright laws.

Sweet! Looks like those 7 emails I sent under different names and e-mail addresses through the Canadian Copyright site paid off.

Can one get in trouble for sending hate mail to a cabinet minister?

On a more serious note...

The number of times they've tried to fast track this bill is truly outrageous. This isn't democracy. If the government can change the way we have to live quietly without listening to the cries of the masses, we have truly lost the original spirit of democracy.
