i have a question on my mind..
is eating raw cake batter bad for you?
because ive been doing it for a while.
and i always eat alot of it.
but the last time i did, i had a stomachache & headache for like, 3 days
i dont know if it had to do with that...
but i heard you can get salmonella if you eat raw eggs...
has anyone gotten REALLY sick from eating cake batter?
because i have to go make some cake because some people are coming over
and i cant resist eating the cake batter

Yes there is a chance of catching salmonella eating raw eggs, however if it makes you feel better the chance of catching it is very slim (wikipedia suggests that every 1 in 30,000 eggs in the US may be infected). If you do get salmonella the symptoms aren't serious but a few people can die from catching it:

'Salmonella is one of the most common causes of food poisoning. The CDC estimates 40,000 people a year are infected with salmonella, with 600 deaths annually. In recent years, the number affected with salmonella has been decreasing'

So yeah you probably shouldn't eat the cake mix, I gotta admit though it is very nice. ^^;

Depending on the type of salmonella, symptoms range from stomachache and diarrhea to fever and death (if not properly treated).

But first of all, do you eat homemade cake batter, with raw eggs, or ready-made, store-bought, "just-add-water" (or better yet, "ready to bake") cake batter? Because if it's the latter, you don't have to worry about salmonella at all, because the stuff is so full of preservatives, no germ can survive within ten feet of it

At many grocery stores in the US you can buy pasteurized eggs (they come in pre-beaten cups), which my brother likes to use when he makes cookie dough, so he can eat a lot before baking the cookies. You won't run the risk of salmonella with pasteurized eggs.

I've never had occasion to look to the stuff when I was up in Canada, but I wouldn't be surprised if you guys had it too.

You know I never thought about it being bad for you. Attempted cookies today, but couldn't be bothered so just ate the dough. Thats damn good eating.
