Real Kana - This is the site that I used to learn kana. I went through one row at a time, then did a comprehensive review after memorizing a few rows. I recommend keeping the charts handy (right beside your browser window, if possible) so that you can reference them if necessary. Alternatively, you can mouse-over characters you don't recognize.
Hiragana and Katakana Practice - This site is great for practicing. The characters are nice and big.
Katakana Review and
Hiragana Review - Also good for practicing.
A few things to note... (In no particular order)
1) To properly understand
wasei-eigo, you should learn basic Japanese pronunciation. English words are being reproduced phonetically, so proper pronunciation is important. (
More Information,
More Information)
Example: "???" (skill) is romanized as "sukiru". The first "u" has very little emphasis, so the pronunciation of the word is closer to "ski-rue". That's definitely easier to identify than "sue-key-rue" (
Note). It's even easier if you know that r's are pronounced differently in Japanese than they are in English. In Japanese, they are pronounced like a soft "d", or half way between an "r" and an "l". It's pretty hard to explain. Just imagine a Japanese person trying to pronounce an "L" sound.
2) A small "?" (katakana) or "?" (hiragana) is used to represent double consonants. (
More Information)
Example: ??? = appu, ??? = atta
3) In katakana, vowels are elongated by placing "?" after them.
Example: ?? = aa, ?? = uu
4) Characters such as "?" (shi) and "?" (tsu) can be difficult to tell apart, especially when written in small fonts. Try to remember that the little dash marks for "shi" are nearly horizontal, while the little dash marks for "tsu" are nearly vertical. The same applies to "?" (n) and "?" (so).
5) This also has to do with pronunciation, but I think it's important to point out. Japanese words are pronounced syllabically. There are no
diphthongs in Japanese.
Example: "koi" is pronounced "coh-ee", not "coy".
6) Practice, practice, practice! You may be able to recognize every character, but you don't want to take more than second or two to identify each one. Remember, you will be reading several characters in a row. You don't want to take a minute to read one word.
