Hacking R4i on DSi XL questions

[technical newbie]

I now have my new DSi XL up and running - with the new card (R4i) - Which is accesssed in a different manner than my old DSTT card !!
I am having a few problems - such as How do I use the cheats in games ? - such as Mariocart ?
I have 2 icons on the screen, including a grey "key" which I assume is what I want - but when selected - this just runs the game
On my old DSTT - I simply selected an icon but this doesn't appear possible on the R4i
Also - is it possible to access "Enhanced WiFi" (or non-enhanced WiFi !!) - when running the card ?
It says "Please configure correct WiFi settings" when I select the purple config, "head" - I am on Ver 1.43b by the way
