The previous issue withstanding, you've shown me my err for simply renaming the _DS_MENU.DAT to _DS_MENU.NDS. So, now I'll decrypt the _DS_MENU.DAT and see where I get from there. Hopefully the files in the Filetrip download are the same/comparable as the ones from Mediafire which I seem unable to access.

Why so complicated. Why not use Wood directly? If your card is one of the exact clones, which looks like it is, then it will behave just like the original R4. Wood R4 can replace the original kernel completly.

Try this: Format your SD card with the panasonic SD formatter and then just put the files under the directory "root" of the Wood R4 package onto the SD card (so it has the .DAT file and the _rpg directory).

Then put one .NDS file also on it and it should boot and work. There is no advantage whatsoever to keep the 1.18 kernel.
