Hacking R4 + 3in1 Rumble - Help

Hi all,
I just got my R4 and EZ 3in1 GBA/RAM/Rumble pack.

The rumble pack doesn't seem to be working. In the options menu of Metroid Prime the Rumble pack option is shaded out and not accessible.

Is there any patching or other setup needed to make the 3in1 work with the R4? I had assumed it was just plug and play...

Any help would be mucho appriciated!
