Using the analog nub. You can configure button layouts in a few ways using preset options.

One setting has left analog nub for L2, right analog for R2, and up analog for L2+R2. Another setting uses the nub for movement (functioning as the psx's d-pad, not an analog stick) and maps those l2/r2 functions to the d-pad. And another setting or two, I can't recall at the moment.

depending on your setting you pick in the ps1 pops menu (press home)

type1
analog Left=L2
analog Right=R2
analog up=L2+R2

type2
L=L2
R=L1
analog Left=L1
analog Right=R1
analog up=L1+R1

type3
L+analog up=L2
R+analog up=R2
analog down=L2+R2

type4 is the same as type1 but the analog and dpad are switched

you can also have a custom set (new pops only)

Just press the HOME button while playing a PSX game, there should be something called "Controller Options" or something like that and they it will say "Type 1". You can change that around to 4 different types of make your own custom control combination. Personally, I use Type 4.
