Hi! I'd like to buy an R-4 but I am new to this....Is this all I need to download and play:

Just to inform you, it's the R4, not the R-4.

And you need to use firmware 1.11 and the recommended ROM trimmer.

Yeah getting an R4 and microSD is the first step, the next most important thing then is a DS, a computer with card reader and internet connection to get the roms and homebrew you want. Anyway don't forget to buy a game if you really like it. I use my R4 to try out games before buying them nowadays. Before I had an R4 I bought games to find out some games weren't as cool as I actually thought they were.

The R4 comes with a MicroSD-USB adapter though. (Or if you have a card reader, MicroSDs come with MicroSD to SD adapters)

Backups are illegal regardless if you own the game or not.

Anyway I don't want to take a risk so I haven't used it. My little brother doesn't care and uses it anyway (so far he's been lucky and nothing happened).

In short I don't know how much of the mentioned rumor is true, but if anyone can affirm it...

The older ones corrupt your SD.

Takes a long time from Canada! Have to get through ice and storms and blizzards and polar bears...

Depends on what amount of time you asked for on the site. Like UPS, 2-4 days I think?

Ah i'm yet to use my R4 yet, but say you obtained an R4 v2. the one without the spring (which i recently got), would the microSD card reader be safer to use than the old one ?
I also have an SD card reader for my digital camera which i can use instead and may be safer. =]

I got my R4 6 months ago and it came with the safe one. (Small, silver with black trim and red LED)

Aren't the bad ones clear blue and large? (Larger than the good ones)
