I'm a total noob when it comes to hacking a wii

So what is a mod chip and what does it allow you to do?

Sorry if I posted it in the wrong section.

a modchip or modification chip is an unofficial hardware installed in your wii's board. main purpose: to be able to play burned games off your wii's dvd drive.

mod chips allow you to
play Backed up games (copied)
Region fee games (play games from other regions jap/aus/usa
for some they play dvds
but this can be up to $100

but you can technically do this for FREE by" soft modding "it which is hacking its firmware (data)
by following this click here but all you need for this is a sd card also there's a risk of bricking it (making it not work but that's like a 1 in a 10000.00

or you can by "WODE" like a modchip like a soft mod but it can NEVER fail (as in it can always play games) but ts like $150

It actually doesn't allow you to do anything that can't be done by softmodding your wii for free...softmod is better since it's free and you have to softmod anyway to install certain things such as the Homebrew Channel.

EDIT: A minute and a half late...previous poster beat me to the punch!!!

Yeah so I'm finally gonna hack my wii (I didn't for 2 years cause I was lazy xD).

Should I buy a modchip or just soft mod it?

Softmod ftw, you don't touch the inside of your wii so there's no possibility for error, that is, if you follow everything correctly. Otherwise you can end up with a full brick =D GOOD LUCK!!!! Lolz jkjk there's really an enormously low possibility for the wii to brick and you really should softmod it instead of going through with a modchip/WODE. I recommend a USB Loader if you're going to softmod it. You save money, no discs, faster load times, and an infinite amount of games just for one hdd (there's no reason to get over 50 gb, I have a 250 gb and I still have 50+ gb left with over 70 games on it).

Hope I helped ^^
