The hardware is hardcoded (such things were popular at the time, still are to an extent) with only WEP support

Best option you can do then is make a secondary network (buy an old router at a pawn shop and wire it in somehow), block all other macs, hide the SSID and all that other jazz. Won't prevent someone truly determined but will hopefully lessen the chances of the neighbourhood skiddy that just learned about aircrack from doing what they do.

Just need a reason why

DS mode Wifi only supports WEP. DSi mode Wifi supports WPA2, but not enough is known about if for even homebrew to work with it.

It might be possible in the future to run DS games in DSi mode and patch them to work with WPA2, but whether it is possible and when it might happen are things we know even less about.
