Hacking Questions about R4i Gold "fakes"

So I'm assuming that the "R4i Gold" device isn't exactly a direct descendant of the R4 "brand", because that name is kind of sullied nowadays, but I was looking at their site and noticed that in their Where to Buy section they actually link directly to the products on the sellers' sites... Has anyone had a problem with "fakes" from these retailers? Are those links trusted, and does anyone have a specific vendor to recommend purchasing from?

And is "fake" devices even a thing anymore? I mean it seems like the technology is advanced enough nowadays to be sort of "un-fakeable", at least at a reasonably functional level.
