Hi there, I started playing again on my 3DS after a long time and some things started to confuse me about how DLCs, SpotPass content, game patches and save files are handled in some circunstances. For example, I have Fire Emblem Awakening and I have downloaded free maps and equipments through SpotPass and that is saved to the SD card. What happens if for some reason I format my 3DS but don't download that content again and go straight to the game? Will it let me load my save file with that equipment already equipped on my characters? Or everything is already present in the game and what you "download" is in fact a "key" that sinalizes to the game that you can use that content?

Then you just deleted your free DLC. Any DLC chars will tend to not be playable and the game will make you go download the DLC again or not show up. Any DLC gear/items will not be usable and will make you download it again or not show up.

If you downloaded the DLC again, the game doesn't care and treats it as business as usual.

Your confusing "key" with your ticket.db info on what you downloaded from the eshop. As long as you don't format the system's storage, you can delete the contents of the SD card as many times as you want and download as many times as you want; the 3DS doesn't care. Formatting the system storage is the same as telling the eshop you have a new 3DS with nothing, anything you paid for will have to be paid for again.

Nintendo doesn't use the NNID, email, login or anything to associate your content with, they bind the content to the 3DS system you downloaded it to. For a legitimate user who buys everything from the eshop, formatting the system storage is probably one of the dumbest things that person can do.

That statement is totally wrong your paid content is linked to the nnid. I know this for a fact as when my first 3ds broke I got the nnid unlinked from the broken 3ds and then linked it to the new 3ds I bought and all my previously bought games were available to be downloaded again.

Edit there are numerous websites that confirm what I say is true including nintendos own site.

Redownloading from the NNID sounds new to me. The SOP is to bind bind content to the 3DS system. Aside from your experience with the NNID, it is unknown if the OP has the DLC under a NNID or not. If he doesn't have a NNID associated with the 3DS then what I said is more or less is true.
It's not new it's been like that for many years. Look at the link to Nintendo's site I posted above that article is from 2016 and you could do it way before then.
