I was just wondering if it was possible to back up his stuff to the SD card that is in it. We might just get a replacement 2DS but either way I wanna back up everything on it. It's modded with the most recent guide on 3ds.guide. Is there a payload or something that will just back it up if I hold a button combo on startup or something? I can't see anything on it but I can hear it move between icons and stuff so I know the motherboard isn't broke.

It's unlikely to be able to backup much of anything if you can't see what you are doing. Saves and such are likely to be convertible to the new system but you will most likely have to redownload all your games and such. If you think you could pull it off screens are usually much cheaper than buying a new DS and just replacing the screens would eliminate your problem as you would still be on the same board.

You got two options.

(1) Fix the 2DS by replacing both the screens. You should be able to get find replacement lcds on ebay or aliexpress.

-or-

(2) Buy a 2DS and swap motherboards if that's a little easier.

Either method involves doing a teardown. Read up at ifixit guide for 2DS here: https://www.ifixit.com/Device/Nintendo_2DS

In case you get a new 2DS, there's also another option nobody mentioned, hardmod old one to get SysNAND backup, then hardmod new one, inject that backup and finally just move the SD card from old one to new, nothing else needed. And the hardmod can be temporary too (as in, no need for modifying cases or whatever since you only need it for a minute). Just screens is best, but there's always the posibility you won't find any available so just leaving this here.

Alright, thanks guys! I appreciate it, I'll probably order a set of new screens then.
if your talking about just a 2ds and not a new 2ds xl then the 2ds screen's or screen is all one piece and only cost $20 and really a kid could even replace it its so easy. But a new 2ds xl is a lot harder.

You could write one of those godmode9 auto-run scripts that run simply by launching it as a payload, wouldn't even matter that the screen couldn't be seen since you could make the script turn off the 2DS once it's done (so you know you're not interrupting it).
Said script could be made to dump the lfcs_b, nand and other things you may want.

Pretty sure b9s Luma allows to automatically backup SysNAND and Otp.bin by holding down a certain button combination while booting up the system, forgot the combination though:/

Combination is start+select+X, though it only dumps the bootroms and the OTP, not the nand.

No! You can't restore the backup of one console into another. I thought you'd know that by now :-/

Alright, not straight away but if you can backup the OTP.bin and do some tweaks, it's possible. I guess the average person isn't gonna do such a roundabout thing.

Ah fair enough - I wonder if there is a tutorial somewhere. A script that ran on boot that dumped everything would be handy for people in this situation (having a console with broken screens but that still works)

I'd say, just replace the screen, there ought to be picture guides for that.
Be wary of ribbon cables when taking appart the 2ds

Long ago (around FW8.1) I needed it for a friend's system and found a guide on reddit on 3dshacks, but it was so long ago I don't have the link anymore. Involved hex editing parts of the NAND between the two according to some values in OTP.bin from what I remember and some other things. Been ages, sorry for not being helpful much. By the way, for scripts, there are threads with premade scripts available: https://gbatemp.net/threads/release-godmode9-scripts-megathread.482150/
