I have been searching around trying to see if it is possible on the current firmware. I would like to play some emulators on my N3DS and I am not opposed to buying a flash cart, I have just been unable to find a concrete answer as to what to buy and how to do it. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

alright thank you for the quick replies. Where would the best place be to keep an eye out for updates on this?

Probably the flashcarts and custom firmware section of this site, that being said, it may be a VERY long time before you see anything happen with 9.6

Supercard, R4i SDHC and the QQ3ds 2nd card all work on n3ds and on all firmwares

That may be the case, but I wouldn't throw out a blanket statement, because there's numerous older cards that won't run on recent firmware (particularly some of the older r4 cards), and some that were blacklisted by the 3ds with the 1.0 firmware even.

Supercard DsTWO it plays emulators and it works on 9.7 firmware but not at 100% speed the gb/gbc/gba is great but snes not so much. But these cards are very hard to find i bought mine back in 2012. I also believe cearp made a thread to fix broken r4 or older ds cards.

And how, exactly, would you get this onto 9.6 firmware? Also there's still some cards that won't work even if you manage to get it installed - particularly ones that didn't work with the initial firmware.

as for cearps fix it may not work on higher firmware idk but supercard eos V1.11 and firmware 1.25 works with or without the fix. I just threw that info out there about the R4 not sure as I've never tried that method I have no need to.

Note**
on the first launch of the dstwo it needs to install the eos for it to work on 3ds this requires older ds such as ds lite or a 3ds with low firmware to run the update files. After the update is ran the card is good to go.
