Apologies if this has been answered already, but my head is spinning from reading all the threads I possibly can over the past few days.
I made an account just to post this thread, so don't shoot me, it's my first post.

I have a 3.0.0 switch (was updated via Pokemon DX cart). Played a bit of Mario Kart, but all offline. Airplane mode has been ON!, and essentially waiting for a MOD to arrive.
Do I update to the latest firmware before using the SX Pro, or leave it on version 3.0.0?

Also, is it suggested to backup my NAND? If yes, do I do this on v3.0.0 or upgrade to latest, then backup NAND?
I've read a few threads about fuses, but it just confuses the $hit out of me.

Appreciate the help!

My advice. If you dont really plan on playing online, just update with this guide- https://gbatemp.net/threads/how-to-...nofficially-without-burning-any-fuses.507461/

It installs autorcm. And then just boot briccmii v2 to repair your cust_data at the end. That way you are on 5.1.0 and can play all of the games!

But doing this will update your card reader and once you go below 4.0 you will not be able to play cards anymore. But it does have something that you can load wit hekate (not with SX OS) to stop it from updating the card reader but you won't be able to play cards then either...

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

I would do 2 hand backups if you do the guide. 1 on 3.0 and one on 5.1.0

The only reason not to update is if you don't want to use a jig and USB cable to load hacks or if you don't want to keep the console in sleep mode 24/7 (or install a trinket but that's more involved than a jig and USB cable). If you are fine using the Pro and booting the Switch into RCM with either a jig or AutoRCM, then you can update. There are unreleased exploits that work up to 4.1 and do not involve using a jig nor USB cable. Instead, they are as simple as loading a webpage.

If not and you want to update, you can follow this guide on how to update without burning fuses because fuses prevent downgrading. The guide looks long and complicated because it is 100% noob-friendly and guaranteed to prevent your fuses from being burnt when you run a higher firmware.

Lastly, whenever you hack any device, always make a backup. Backup your NAND with this tool in the event your Switch turns into a paperweight, all hope is not lost.

Thanks for the replies.

If I have no plans to use this Switch online for games, I guess I'll just update to the latest version, which I believe is 5.1.
The guide you posted a link to above is MASSIVE and intimidating to a NOOB. It's definitely thorough though, I'll give you that :-)

I'll attempt to do a NAND backup on 3.0 and then again on 5.1.

Another question, once it's on FW 5.1, and the SX OS is loaded, how do you update to the next FW?
For instance, if 5.2 comes out, can you update offline via the SD card, or do you now have to go back online to update?
Nothing I need to worry about now, but just making sure I don't F myself later on.

You can update either through the tutorial I linked you (replace the appropriate steps with the newest firmware which is basically only step 5) or update officially. What we don't know is whether the new firmware will burn a new fuse or not which will make downgrading harder. For instance, updating from 5.0.2 to 5.1 does not burn a fuse so people who have a NAND dump of 5.0.2 can use that to go back down to 5.0.2

It wouldn't hurt to backup the 3.0.0 FW but frankly, I don't see the point. You are going to update to the latest anyway at which point the 3.0.0 backup will be of no use. If you want to save space then just backup BOOT 0/1 and SYS of 5.1.0. The USER partition does contain your saves, but they can be backed up separately with a homebrew called checkpoint. Or don't even bother with a backup. Using SX OS itself seems unlikely to brick your Switch. You don't really install it. You copy it to an SD card and boot it. I haven't bothered with a backup since Hekate first came out (I've updated to 5.1.0 since). I will do a backup if I plan to do anything risky though.

To update past 5.1.0 just update like normal in official FW. Updating in SX OS would probably work too but I'm not going to try it.
