does a 4gig micro sd card work on a r4?

Only if you can find a non-SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) microSD, which are very rare and very slow.

R4 does not support SDHC cards.

Isn't this the wrong place?

Anyway, just buy multiple 2 gigs. No matter what flashcart you use, 2 gigs are probably the fastest.
