I have recently aquired a PSP 3000. When checking the firmware, the version is 6.61. At present all the guides I have looked at for downgrading or CFW state that if the PSP is at 6.61 I am 'out of luck'.

I presume that this PSP can't be downgraded then? I have checked using the module checker tool and its a 03g, though I don't think thet is going to help, as all downrades/CFW installations need the PSP to be at 6.60 or below.

Is there any hope?

I can't find any information about the 6.61 firmware anywhere, even on the sony pages.

I'm even usnsure if the half byte loader will work with this version of the firmware...

It was a brand new PSP? because I've never heard of 6.61, even the wiki page says 6.60 is the latest... http://en.wikipedia....mware#Version_6 (I know wiki can't be 100% trusted).

Try to launch the any fakesigned homebrew and see if it runs.

Maybe sony has done some hardware modifications with the latest psp batch...

Please can you take a picture (phone/camera/whatever) of the system info page which has the firmware readout. Until i see it, i won't believe this isn't just some spoofing....

I'll do this when I get home from work. I was suprised to see it too TBH. The PSP was bought off eBay, mint condition, virtually perfect, though this firmware issue has confused me somewhat.

Modifying that information has been happening since day dot (well almost) so i'd be unsurprised to find out that the seller is just trying to wind you up...

The last jap-only update I read about was for an earlier 6.x, when the monster hunter game or whatever came out, and was just a last-minute compatibility patch to suffice until the next official firmware update was rolled out (since it wasn't ready in time to be packaged).

Anyways press Select on the home screen. If a menu comes up, it's hacked, if not, then try some signed homebrew like others said.

he has a psp 3000 and if it's superior to 6.20 he can't get a perma patch so i doubt that
off topic:Rydian is Phantasy star character now?

Most people unfamiliar with PSPs assume that the "sleep" mode is the "turn off" mode (since it still takes a second to go up or down and a PSP with a good battery can survive in sleep mode off the charger for days) and sleep mode keeps the hacked status so it's worth a check.

And Phantasy Star Online. My favorite Mag (Rati) and weapon (Brionac).

That's defiantly a hacked firmware. US and UK PS sites have 6.60 as the latest.

reading more apparently its a bug
as if this ever happens and you try to continue the psp just says the file is corrupted
and you just delete it of the memory card to get rid of the message and it wont come back
