With the NGP on the horizon, Sony drops the price of its current-generation portable by $40; worldwide sales nearly 68 million.

Last month, Sony showed off its Next Generation Portable, the dual-thumbstick, touchscreen-enabled device intended to take on the 3DS and iOS devices. Set for release later this year in as-yet unidentified territories, the device will succeed the PSP, first released in the Western market in 2005.

To further entice gamers to pick up the PSP, Sony today announced it will slash $40 off the price of the current generation portable starting February 27. Originally, the system had been offered for $250 at its North American launch, before having its price cut to $200 in 2006. A discount to $170 followed in April 2007. The PSP Go was introduced in October 2009 with a price point of $250, which was slashed to $200 one year later.

As part of its announcement, Sony also revealed the latest sales figures for the PSP. As of the end of December 2010, the handheld had sold 23 million units in North America and 67.8 million units worldwide. By comparison, Nintendo's DS family of handheld systems has sold nearly 144 million units as of the end of last year.

Sweet. If you were looking to get a PSP, now is a good time for American consumers. I'll still stick with my PSP 1000 but it's definitely worth a buy either way.

Its a fire sale.

For the past several months PSP sales in NA have been a disaster. Suspiciously, PSP sales figures disappeared from NPD results soon after. And as far as software is concerned, the PSP hasn't had a hit in a very long time. (This despite some quality releases in the past month.)

The PSP is a great system and it has an outstanding portable library. However as a product its a complete and total failure. At least in the United States (Aka, the most important market.)

Well 62 million people is only like 10% of the population of a single American state.

So what?

If we get the DS sales (144.5 million), the PSP represented almost exactly 30%. 30% from a market DOMINATED by Nintendo on the last 3 decades is a bad thing? On japan it represented a little more (32%) and on US a little less (28.5%). On a market always dominated by Nintendo on the last 3 decades. Sure it failled.

Do those numbers take into account those who actually KEPT their systems? I don't think so...... How can you try a system without somehow acquiring it? There isn't always gonna be someone to have the console for you to test, and not all stores carry Demo unit for the PSP much anymore... Which pretty much leaves you with only one of two options... Buy, or steal. Total sales don't account for how popular the system truly is... There is no real way of checking that without an unbiased poll. (Which will never happen due to the amount of fanboyism..)

Sure, but you can say the same for the DS. How can we know how many kept their systems?
Of course these numbers are only about the sales of the systems, not about the active system players.

Exactly... Going by personal experience and the people I know and the place I live... The DS is top dog in the hands of 7/10 people on average here... Do a head count on consoles, that's the only way you'll really know... The PSP never really had a huge support market for it... Thus the constant price drops and 'exclusive' deals and combo packs.

You want to go by sales? No, the PSP wasn't a total flop or failure... You want to go by customer opinion? That's a different story.

Personal experience doesn't means shit.
Go to Japan and you'll see people with their PSP's playing MH/MH type of games on every place.

On this forum, I can be sure most of the people owns a DS. On a PSP forum, I can say most of them own a PSP.

See? Useless.

So now we're in Japan? Um... okay? No duh PSP's run rampant there... Sony's home IS Japan... The DS and PSP are basically evenly matched there.....

No, they are not. DS outsold the PSP by a lot out there (68% against 32%).

The point is that, for Sony first experiment on handheld, PSP did extremely well. Of course, it have it's failures and the support of the thirdies is a little lackluster (piracy too early on the system). But even so, it have many GREAT/EXCELENT/MUST PLAY games that justifies the buy.

With NGP, I don't see what can be wrong with it. It's like the PSP, but with everything better or correcting everything PSP did wrong (better screen, two analogs, touchscreen (capacitive), touchpad, no UMDs but cartridges, support of many thirdies and a lot of diffent engines for development available from DAY 1 (even Sony's PhyreEngine)). The only thing that could go wrong with this is the price, but we have yet to know.

Except that is worldwide sales and not NA.

psp hardware sales
Region Units sold
Japan 15 million (as of December 28, 2009)[1]
United States 17 million (as of March 14, 2010)[107]
Europe 12 million (as of May 6, 2008)[108]
United Kingdom 3.2 million (as of January 3, 2009)[109]
Worldwide 62 million (as of September 16, 2010)[1]

DS hardware sales
date Japan America Other Worldwide
2010-06-30[23] 30.86 48.00 53.18 132.04
2010-09-30[24] 31.55 49.28 54.75 135.58

It appears the US has outsold Japan in units but I think they ay have caught up or surpassed since there have been so many psp hits in Japan and the psp and ds have been close in sales there for awhile.

However SPH73 is right about the psp not having many hits in America.

The flaw in this logic is if piracy were the primary factor in diminishing PSP sales, then the DS would be affected tenfold. Flash carts were anticipated on the DS since before its launch due to their prevalence on the GBA. And the most blatant point being that piracy has always been far easier on the DS than PSP. On the prior, you slap in a flash cart and play games. On the PSP, it's always been about modifying batteries, running exploits, motherboard revisions, and contending with frequent firmware updates.

There are numerous and more likely explanations than that. Sony employed terrible and embarrassing marketing gimmicks--remember the fake publicity blogs? Or how about the racially tinged billboard campaign? Or their insistence on marketing it as a general media device instead of focusing on handheld gaming? Is it any wonder why, following such trends, developers were shy to embrace it? Ultimately Sony failed to get enough systems into gamers hands, coupled with the higher development costs and meeting with smaller returns vs the competing system.

Piracy is typically a buzzword that their spokespeople use to excuse the failures of internal departments in the eyes of shareholders and the media. This argument has almost always proven to have very little support in reality.

On another note, I'm not convinced the move to cartridges will be beneficial. The DS got away with the majority of games at 64MB or less, while PSP games are typically 600MB and up to 1.5GB. I can't help wondering how things will be any different this time, when they attempt to pack that much data onto a more expensive medium.

Why count only one market? And even then, it still sold well compared to DS as I've said early.

Calling US the most important market is kinda wrong for PSP.
