PS4 now has a public backup loader for FW 4.05

The PlayStation 4 scene has been incredibly active lately, with new homebrew announcements and projects being constantly teased. Now, less than a week after the release of the PS4 homebrew loader, PS4HEN, there's something big that will most certainly grab people's attention; the public release of a backup loader for PlayStation 4 systems that are on firmware version 4.05. The method to using backups is quite similar to how one enables homebrew on PS4HEN, which you can read more about here. Run the kernal exploit, inject the payload, put the pkg file onto a USB drive, disable your internet connection to your PS4, and install via the package installer. This will allow people to load backups of their games, so long as they are decrypted, and run through a tool called PKG Kitchen, which turns the game into a pkg file, that in turn, allows you to install it to your PS4. This is not an end-all-be-all tool, however, as only games that are on firmware 4.05 or less will work, meaning most games from 2017 and beyond will not work. For reference, Gravity Rush 2 is the last 4.05 title, and launched at the very start of 2017.

Interesting, but indeed not for the uninitiated. Installing packages is inherently risky if you screw up any particular part of the process and exposes you to the possibility of data corruption. Fortunately, the PS4 seems to have pretty robust recovery functionality, so there's that.

what is with that decryption thing for pkgs.
what are the downsides?

Piracy wise...
Not much.

Idk how well you know the Vita scene?
But Mai dump tool and Vitamin decrypted the games as well.
The games where incomplete sometimes, leading to odd crashes.
NoNpDRM loads encrypted almost 1:1 backups (apart from the fake license, the backups are 1:1)

The main difference between decrypted content and encrypted content is that a 1:1 backup is a completely untouched backup.
The files are still encrypted.
Decrypted content isn't 1:1 anymore.

Basically, 1:1 backups almost guarantee for 100% compatibility (and it's used for digital preservation) thanks to them being encrypted.
Decrypted content works, can have a really high compatibility but it isn't preferred for digital preservation.

Not too much backing up, it’s just plain piracy right now. People have said that piracy won’t be good because of how large games are but that appears to not be that true so far. Games go up to about 30gb (not included install data). For example Dying Light is 11gb (and was just released to work with PS4hen). Don’t ask me for links though. Good progress though. :)

I wouldn't really say it's a backup loader.
Unlike the aptly named 'backup manager', the first(?) ps3 homebrew, that was dedicated to loading games and making them playable.
Or, TWLoader to play ds backups on 3ds.

This is just a payload that gives some patches, similar to a cfw, to skip some security when installing and loading content. :)

(We wouldn't really call reinand or rxtools or luma a 'backup loader', right? It just lets us install games and play them, when we shouldn't be able to)

Well at least peasantstation fans don't have to buy games no more except for the one releasing this year that is or until backup loaders support them.

Does that mean I could install P.T and play it with my own account ? :)
