PS3 System Software Update Today

The Official Playstation Blog yesterday announced a firmware update for PS3, which should be live at the time of this writing. Sony Vice President Eric Lempel said the update is optional in the U.S. and Canada. However, CVG reports the update is mandatory for PS3 owners in Europe.

"This minor firmware improves certain aspects of system software, and is not mandatory to connect to PSN," Lempel said.

The update comes just a week after the 4.10 update, which saw the Playstation Network take on the new name Sony Entertainment Network.

they've got a lot of things in mind or probably just bug fixes but i believe they are going slow and not going to make the 3.55 mistake. i just hope kakaratoto (or somethign) 's hack works on the latest version.

Playstation Network is still called that, the accounts that are tied to Playstation Network are called Sony Enterainment Network accounts.

Surely it's only mandatory for those who want to use PSN. I don't see how they could force you to update if you stay offline.

Nice how the update is "mandadory". May want to fix that blaring typo in the title. Capitalizing that corrected word would probably be in your best interest, too. Effing sub-titles. That image needs to be cropped. As it stands now, there is a weird amount of extra image there that puts off the centering pretty badly.

As for the update, woo, another PS3 update. These aren't really news at this point, as the PS3 hacking scene has come to a seemingly screeching halt. I mean, really, even if it's patching exploits, we may never know they existed. This is just another minor update. It's nothing special at all. That's just one man's opinion on the matter, though.

Edit: Ah, the image is just horribly non-black theme friendly. Still something that should be fixed. The theme is offered, and not that much care has to be taken to make sure black doesn't end up on black.
